The icon-indicator on the status-bar may be double-clicked to toggle the display of hidden files.

The next logical question, of course, is "How am I supposed to know where to click when the icon itself is hidden, as happens when hidden files are in the visible state?" That particular question has only an existential answer, which involves the flogging of developers who make curious design faux pas during moments of stress and obvious personal crisis.

if you mouse-hover on status bar panes there is an infotip explaining what each one of them does

Phfffft!

Design.
Faux.
Pas.

Distinguishing individual status-bar sections is much easier on some themes compared to others. On non-DWM themes (such as Win7's "Classic"), the parts are fairly distinct, whereas on transparency-based themes if there's no content (such as an invisible icon) the partition lines may as well be invisible. Not even a thousand of Shakespeare's monkeys can rationalise their way out of that by relying upon "infotip" workarounds.
