Thumbnails taking 1 to 10 minutes to load

This has been driving me up the wall for many many years. How do I get thumbnails to load faster? Loading a folder of thumbnails can take anywhere from 1 second to 10 minutes. This is for any given folder i.e. one single folder might sometimes take 1 second and sometimes 10 minutes or anything in between. The wild swings in load time can even occur over a period of a few minutes i.e. it can take a few seconds for a folder to load then I navigate away and come back 5 minutes later and it takes 10 minutes.

I am not seeing any relation between load time and number of photos in the folder or size of the individual photos. I couldn't even tell you what the average load time is because it's just all over the place. The folders have anywhere from 10 to 70 photos each, rarely up to 100; average photo size is maybe 4 Mb. All of this can happen when no other programs are running.

Don't know if it's relevant but this does not happen in Windows Explorer, IrfanView or various photo manager programs I use.

I am not aware of any problem with thumbnails, but have a look here for possible explanations

also see what other time consuming xplorer2 features you may have enabled like grouping, color coding etc. It all adds up
