The link to this topic is broken. You wanted us to not reply, admit it! :baaa:
your software tools are likely to be huge by yesteryear's standards
I try to keep mine small. :) But by your own standards ("sizes well under 1MB, no installation required"), 7-Zip is out because there is no complete portable version available and the installer already is 1.4 MB large.

The smallest tools I use (almost) every day are probably:

1. KiTTY Portable for remote server administration.
2. The sam editor. (Admittedly, it requires a giant runtime on Windows though...)
3. AdiIRC, an acceptable alternative to mIRC (for which I have a license anyway).

I don't understand it... the HTM file has the correct link but the server is stuck sending the older version that had the invalid link!?

Crosshair by Mike Lin. The app is a bit hard to find these days. https://web.archive.org/web/2013111120 ... air.shtml

Here are mine, most are portable apps.

Megatops BinCalc v 1.0.4 by Ding Zhaojie - Binary calculator
Convert by Josh Madison - https://joshmadison.com/convert-for-windows/
DesktopOk http://www.softwareok.com/?Download=DesktopOK. Put your desktop icons back where they should be when moving between multi-monitor setups. Why is this still an issue in 2018!!
DiskLED http://blogs.sepago.de/tools/category/diskled/ Becuuase laptop manufactures think that having no LED on view for harddisk activity is a good thing
SpaceSniffer http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/spac ... index.html
ZBar again for multi-monitor setups http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/zbar/index.html
ZoomIt is great
7zip
SumatraPDF
WSCC https://www.kls-soft.com/wscc/ It takes all of NirSoft Utilities and Sysinternals Suite goodies and some windows stuff and packages it all together

7-zip, Ninite (a customized version per computer, although I own a pro licence), Sumatra and, depending on the computer's end user, ZoomIt goes on EVERYTHING.

-I generally go with the Avast https://www.avast.com/en-ca/index#pc anti-virus engine, even though the nags get a little overly-naggy
-Greenshot http://getgreenshot.org/ for taking screen caps and then annotating them.
-F.Lux https://justgetflux.com/ cuz I'm still using Windows 7
-WizMouse https://antibody-software.com/web/softw ... the-mouse/ which allows me to scroll non-active Windows (usually x2). No idea if it works with Win10, but indispensible
-7 Sticky Notes http://www.7stickynotes.com/ because I don't like gunk on my monitor
-System Scheduler https://www.splinterware.com/products/scheduler.html (the free version) for doing scheduler tasks. Dead easy and quick.
-I use the ridiculously cheap Spartan Lite http://m8software.com/clipboards/sparta ... anlite.htm for Clipboard management, but there's a free version called M8 http://m8software.com/clipboards/freeclip/freeclip.htm from the same guys
-I get by with the free version of Evernote after paying for a few years. I've tried to install One-Note a gazillion times. No go for me. YMMV
-Password Safe https://pwsafe.org/for giving me a localized copy of the passwords stored in Last Pass (which is indispensible and rather inexpensive)

I echo all the apps from Nirsoft and SysInternals as needed. And I agree that most of the ones from the DesktopOK guy are worth looking at, even that one that Nikos would rather not see mentioned here. When I'm dealing with moving files out of a holding tank to five or six folders, I find having a couple of windows open helps me do it quickly with drag and drop. STILL use x2v2.5, don't get me wrong. But as TARGETS, the extra window helps.

From a notoriously penurious guy!

Freeware

Textify - grab fixed text controls
7+ Taskbar Tweaker - various taskbar tweaks
Free Download Manager - what it says on the tin
Falkon Web Browser (nee Qupzilla) - light weight browser i use internally
WordWeb Dictionary/Thesaurus
CSVFileView - oftentimes Excel/Calc/123/Quattro are overkill
Rapid Environment Editor - edit environment variables, safely, in a sensible UI

Payware

ClipboardFusion - clipboard manager (Pro), can't remember why Pro,
Actual Title Buttons - adds buttons to title bar - stay on top, roll up/down, send to tray etc.

And some of those already mentioned

Clavier+, a keyboard mapping tool that does not suck.
