problem with shift-delete

Post by Paul Elliott »

I'm having a lot of problems getting the shift-delete to work when
permanently deleting a bunch of files. it is taking
around 6 tries before it actually works. until then it seems to be adding
then removing a seperator bar next to the delete button. can this be
checked out and hopefully fixed?

Thanks.

shift+drag reorders toolbar buttons
so either make sure you don't move the mouse while clicking or use shift+del key!

I've had trouble with this, too...

x2 seems to interpret even a 1 pixel shift as a drag, and reorders the toolbar. Is it possible to increase this drag 'window' ?, ie. one would have to move, say, 6-8 pixels before x2 regarded it as a shift+drag, anything under that would be seen as a shift+delete.

Then the unsteady-of-hand among us could once again enjoy direct delete from the toolbar.

In the meantime shift+delete from the keyboard works fine. :)

It took me a while to figure out what you were talking about because I never use the toolbar Delete button. (In fact, I had removed it from the toolbar.)
My preferences are
1. the kb Delete key, or
2. r-click context menu & pick the Delete item
Both are easier for me than rolling mouse all the way up to the toolbar (but, then again, it could be just habit)

However, having found how to duplicate the problem, I agree that it is pain to see those separator bars appear instead of the intended action.
Clearly something is called for to resolve the situation.

But, I am not sure that the cause is mouse movement at all!
It seems to me -- after carefully trying many times to use a number of the buttons -- that Shift+any_button will insert a separator bar if motion is 0 pixels**. That the Delete button even works sometimes may be dependent on timing of when the button is depressed compared to where x2 is in its loop of testing for this-or-that... ;)
Even so, the solution may still be to put a threshold on mouse movement.
A 3-4 pixel shift should be sufficient, or a special 'rule' for the Delete button that inhibits inserting a separator bar.

** Zero pixel movement assured by:
1. select item(s) for deletion.
2. scroll to Delete button
3. lift mouse from pad to stop further scrolling
4. depress Shift
5. l-click mouse

Plus, I note that double-click at (5.) will activate deletion.

... so, I guess I will just resume my old habits & not try to learn to use the toolbar button for this. ;)

I had not noticed, but indeed, it is so! Thanks fgagnon, for pointing this out! Shift+d-click deletes every time. And no seperators! :)

there's no way for me to check the drag operation
the only option would be to disable shift+drag altogether

How about adding a 'Lock Toolbar' option like many other programs have?

That sounds like a good idea :)
(but I don't write the code)
