icon overlays?

Post by derailer »

Nikos, I have a question regarding icon overlays for folders and icons (such as the share and shortcut overlays etc.)

The project im currently working on uses a source control program called subversion(http://subversion.tigris.org/), which includes an explorer shell integration (http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/). This allows me to see checked out files / items with differences and everything else common with source control programs. They display correctly in windows explorer:

however... in xplorer2 none of the overlays are shown:

Reading through various other pseudo-related posts i searched for, it seems like this might be a bit more challenging problem than it seems at the surface. Is this action intentional? I understand it might have something to do with the source control programs shell integration, but if thats the case, do you think you could go into a bit more detail on why this would happen in that case, so i could contact the developers of the program and let them know what they might need to fix (if its not an xplorer2 issue). This is the only info i could find in the faq, which isnt any help at all: http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/docs/Tort ... allation-1

Actually, tortoisesvn (and tortoisecvs) overlays are not shown in most explorer-like programs. The one exception I know of is A43. Given that, my guess is that they are using some non-standard way of setting the overlays. I was going to e-mail them a while back about this, but never did.

For my directories that use subversion, I just set a custom column set that shows the "SVN Status" column, which gives the same information as the overlay, just in text form. Using this column, you can even set visual filters in xplorer2 to just show modified (or whatever you want) files. At least for me, this works better than the overlays.

Thanks, that sounds fine to me. i Just cant seem to get it working as easy as i thought. How can i get access to the SVN Status column? I dont see it readily available, or any way of adding new column types. Maybe its really obvious but im too tired and delerious to notice ;] . I almost get the impression that you are outputting the SVN Status command to its own column, which i have no idea how to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also while doing a search for trying to figure this out, i realized the icon overlay problem was already asked a few times... sorry about that... didnt find any mention of the SVN Status column fix though, so this thread is still useful ;)

this system relies on a rare shell extension for icon overlays which i didn't consider important. Even now in retrospect i don't consider it viable since if x2 starts looking for custom overlays it will be slowing down access for all folders

the columns should be selectable through Alt+K as usual. However these guys opted to be different in yet another way so you will only get the extra columns listed if you start x2 from a folder that exports these columns in the first place. This has been discussed before too ;)
