Beep error when selecting any file/folder

Post by Defcon »

This is not an xplorer2 problem I'm sure but I'm baffled. When I select any file/folder I hear an error beep from Windows.

I don't have any special settings turned on, this is a normal install.  Its driving me insane, and I don't know where its coming from. Any help or ideas where I can look.

Thanks

Is that on Vista? If yes, it seems to be an open issue with several apps, and it has been reported a few times for xplorer2:

http://forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5584
http://forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic.php?t=4880
http://forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5003

The first thread mentions an easy "fix": turning off all sounds in xplorer2 via the Vista Volume Mixer.

Yes it is Vista, I should've mentioned it. I have to say I am not surprised, Vista is annoying like this at times.

The problem just started happening, I've had Vista and xplorer2 for months. I wish I knew what triggered it. I'm going to try the other solutions too.

Found the problem and its documented by Microsoft -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944150

The .current value appears to be empty but it isn't. You can either open the Default value and hit Ok to clear it, or delete the key as the KB suggests.

Thanks for posting this! :-)

Maybe it should be added to the FAQ: http://www.zabkat.com/x2faq.htm

after some further research, this beep should only happen if you uncheck the "XP style" box during the installation. Without this, you don't get the manifest file installed, and you get this fault. Without the manifest you also lose out on some advanced features like grouping

so if you get this beep in vista, your first action should be to run the installer again and leave all the default checkboxes ticked. That should solve your problem -- or let me know

The question is why x2 still has this check box? Why would the one will want to clear it?
I'm using Xplorer2 - the only file manager that does not suck. Actually, it rocks!

that's the fault of the guy that made the installer, bless him. I have rephrased it so that it says "vista" too

I don't think this should be an option in the first place. I mean, who on the Earth don't need the manifest file?

Why dont you just build the manifest file into the program?

No they don't. As the article says, you just need to make sure your manifest doesn't have tags with two schema properties, eg:

<ms_asmv3:trustInfo xmlns:ms_asmv3="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3">

You'll find most software has an embedded manifest and works fine in both XP and Vista.

IIRC, certain XP flavours had problems with "non-XP" parts of manifest.
