We'll assume your allusion to ancient Greece was in the Euclidean sense of algorithms, and not in the political sense of Divide and Rule... Greece (or, more aptly, it's lot of quarrelsome city-states) was more a victim of that philosophy rather than the instigators.  Besides, when you have Alexander the Great around to prove that the sword is indeed mightier than the wax-tablet, Greece's one little interestingly failed political idea (democracy) pales into insignificance, histo-culturally speaking.

And, the Chinese Emperor should have lost his throne from shame for trying to take credit for an Indian creation, rather than being outsmarted by a clever mathman's hoodwink.

On topic, though, being a recent victim of Shell Extension Fraud myself (and with Nikos' acumen, killed the little bastard), I can attest that ShellExView quickly became my new best friend, and is one of the first ports of call in tracking down evil-doers.  For those interested, it requires no installation, and is fully x64 compliant in the registry.  One of those little tools (like image-backups) which should be on all PC's.

(The most obvious approach, by the way, isn't so much divide-and-conquer as it is disable-the-most-recently-installed-things-first school of thought.  But hey, as Alexander dreamed, to his well-fleeced Macedonian compatriot's regret, all roads lead to Rome. :D)

One thing I used to do, and need to get back into the habit of doing again, is keep a log of everything installed on my computer.  That way if something starts going awry I can check the log and start uninstalling the most recent entries.

If you use Revo Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/, you can use its detail view and list your programs in reverse install order, which is easier than keeping a log. However it does not deal with programs that don't install but still write to registry.

I don't know about inventing everything, but having invented Feta cheese does deserve some praise.

I am trying this remedy, but it won't work, since the software won't allow me to disable a large number of shell extensions at one go. So... any other ideas?

[Edit:] Never mind. Solved. I had to check fewer items than I thoughy.
