Classic default skin as hi-rez draft#1...

Post by kunkel321 »

Okay dokey then...
I'll keep reworking these to make them closer to the classic
default set, but this should be usable.   DrawPlusX4 is being
buggy and doesn't want to let me crop the set (a critical last step).
Anyway, hopefully they work.

32x32

48x48 EDIT: Oops  had the wrong dimensions on the 48x48, this one should be right though.  48x3552
Image

Folks who are interested, should be able to right-click on one
of the images and choose "Save image as..." from the context menu.
Save it to a location you can find.  Then Rename the image file,
and put it in the proper directory per Nikos' directions in x2v2.

EDIT:  Here is an icon library (in .ICL format) that has icons which match the above skins.
It's pretty big, 6Mb.  256 icons that include the image sizes of the skins.
HOW TO use the icon library:
(note this won't work in x2 lite)
If you simply download the above icon library and try to open it,
Windows will tell you there is no associated application, but follow these directions instead....
First go to the customize tab and chose something to customize.
In the image here, I'm choosing "User commands" then "Organize."
Image
Now the "Organize" dialog pops up, as in the picture below.
Double-click an item and the "Command properties" dialog opens.
From the Drop-down list that says "Icon," choose "Custom."
Image
As shown in the picture, the "Change Icon" dialog opens.
Either click in the location and type the directory where you've
downloaded the icon library to, or click "Browse" and browse there...

EXTRA power tip:  Notice that the icon chooser dialog always opens to the
same file at the same location: %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
(This is the Windows library that contains its custom icons.)
You can exploit this default behavior by putting your icon library in the
same folder and giving it a similar name.  First copy (Ctrl+C) the
"%SystemRoot%\system32" from the icon chooser and close the icon
chooser and the other dialogs.  Now click in the Address Bar of x2 and
paste the directory in there with (Ctrl+V) and hit enter.  This will show
you where your root folder is (mine is "C:\Windows\System32").
Iv'e pasted my icon library into that location and named it "Shell32xx.icl"
In the picture below, I've edited the location by changing Shell32.dll to
Shell32xx.icl and pressing enter.
Image
The "Browse" dialog is cumbersome, so this recommended way is much easier.
Once you've opened the library, just double-click an icon to choose it.
(If you ever change the location of the library, you'll need to reassign
your custom icons because x2 will "lose" them.)

EXTRA EXTRA power tip: You can use x2's robust renaming capabilities to
change your "Shell32xx.icl" into "Shell32xx.DLL" and it will work just the
same, but it will be easier to make the change as in the above icon chooser
picture (because it's closer to the default name). I simply left the icon
library as an .ICL so people wouldn't think it was spyware or something.
Also, you can name it anything, as long as it's a unique name--it doesn't
have to be "Shell32xx."

EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA power tip:  The freeware tool I use to bulk convert
my images to icons, then compile them into resource libraries is IcoFx.
Get it from SourceFordge or some other other reputable site.  (You can
also use it to edit my existing icon library).

Also, thanks Kilman for helping me figure out how to post this ...  End.

Just tried the 16x16 set in x2...
Image
Just guess their okay.  Some look better, others look worse.
Overall I think they're too dark and the anti aliasing is smearing in some spots.
What do others think?

I figure discernibility at 16x16 is a good litmus test for whether they're drawn correctly.

Is there an alpha of x2v2?  Where's the download location?

Thanks Kilman!  So if we now need 2 skins (low and hi rez), what is the naming convention??? They can't both be "x2skin."
EDIT:  Okay, my bad...  I wasn't reading the Changes log, because it still reflected v1.6.1.5...   Still, "x2skin_XL.png"  doesn't seem to work either.  I'll try more tomorrow.
Hmmm....  log says," * large toolbar icons supported, create an alpha-
transparent bitmap called x2skin_XL.PNG and put it in the  installation
folder, see http://zabkat.com/x2skin.htm. Recommended icon sizes in
range [24,48].

An "alpha-transparent bitmap" is the same thing as a standard png file, yes?

yes it is
make sure your toolbar has the correct # of icons (74, more to be added) and also make sure the manifest file is next to that 'kenny.exe'

Okay...  Coffee helps.  (It's the wee hours here.)
It finally occurred to me that I was putting the skin in the default x2 directory instead of the kenny folder..
Image
Yippy!!!
Pictured, is the 32x32.  Still having problems with the 48x48...
For one thing, I had the wrong dimensions...  Have fixed that, but now when I try to launch kenny, I just keep getting the runtime debug error over and over.  (only with 48x48 though...  the other skin sizes work as expected).

Draft#2

FYI Here's the latest changes...
I also applied "supersampling" to the exports, but I can't see any difference.
More changes to come.

Nikos, will the more-than-74-icons sized skin be part of the next major release, or is that going to be later?  I'm preparing to send you a zip folder, and want to know if I should wait, or send it now...

Draft #3

Post by kunkel321 »

Okay, so we're getting pretty close to an exact duplicate...
IMPORTANT NOTE:  These are being created in anticipation of the forth coming x2 v2.  The hi-rez ones won't work with the current v1.xxx.

You are aware, are you not, that getting this involved with Minutia will lead to symptoms resembling bi-polar disorder?  Trust me, I know things about Minutia.  And, weirdly enough, Minutia knows things about me, too.  We dated for awhile, and it turns out that size really does matter.  She's a strange mistress.

While the troll is cute, since the icon is a font selector, I think the original green blob is the top part of the Chinese character for "character". See Wikipedia for "Chinese character" and look at the second glyph. The first glyph is "Han/Chinese" and the second is "character". Or "kanji" in Japanese...
