x² does not preserve the tabs that were open in the pane
that x² closes when switching from dual to single pane!
Seems to me it would be much better if x² restored the tabs
that were open when returning x² to dual pane display!

What if the layout pane split is not 50-50?
Ctrl-O reopens the closed pane at the layout split point,
but Ctrl-E (after "sort of" minimizing the pane),
restores the "sort of" minimized pane to the midpoint ...
