x² and On DEMAND features ...
26February2012
Greetings.
x² is almost in a league by itself.
I also know of a couple other top-notch file explorers.
Total Commander (and most/many ToC inspired) "knock-offs" -
and now Free Commander allow having different views/layouts
in every tab of the same window/instance.
These others also allow users to switch views/layouts on demand.
As far as I know, x² does not support multiple layouts
in the same window/instance & requires opening a new window
(whether a single-instance process or not) to utilize
each different, pre-configured view.
It seems to me such "single-instance" multiple layouts would greatly enhance x².
Something else that would enhance x² would be
the ability for users to load on demand certain shell fields.
Opening a directory/folder with many multimedia files &
many multimedia type shell fields to be displayed
can lock up the file explorer (& PC!) for a WHILE
while retrieving those fields for all those files.
As far as I know only ToC gives the option to load on demand
certain fields of selected or all files ...

Greetings.
Total & Free Commander give users the ability to toggle
viewing those protected hidden/system files
REGARDLESS of the current state of the registry ShowSuperHidden setting.
x² (as far as I can tell) only shows those protected hidden/system files,
IF the registry ShowSuperHidden setting is set to 1;
however, I seem to have worked out an improvement to that -
for those who (like me) prefer to work with ShowSuperHidden set to 0.
I do not launch x² (nor 2x) by a StartMenu shortcut.
I launch them by scripts.
I tweaked the scripts to set the registry ShowSuperHidden setting to 1
BEFORE launching 2x² & then set ShowSuperHidden back to 0
AFTER the GUI appears.
Then I can toggle viewing those protected hidden/system files
(even though the registry ShowSuperHidden setting is 0)
by toggling Show Hidden files in 2x & in x²
(after having made all additional appropriate/necessary x² advanced tweaks ...)

Re: x² and On DEMAND features ...
Turns out my "View hidden/system files" script/tweak is not permanent.AEN007 wrote:Something else that would enhance x²

Various/Unknown Windows/system events that happen at various/unknown times
(apparently) trigger processes to re-read the registry.
No matter ... I wrote a(n) (additional) script that will re-enable
(as seamlessly as ToC/FrC hotkeys)
viewing those hidden/system files in open 2x² windows ...
at least until triggered off again ...

Greetings.
Thanks for the reply.
I have to ask HOW?
Regarding the x² contextmenu (CM), my sentiments parallel otlaolap's
- so I haven't been using the x²CM.otlaolap wrote:I have spent a great amount of time customizing my Windows right-click menus... The result is a context menu that has items grouped and ordered in a way which supports directly the work I do, and I like it...
I enabled the x²CM to see about moving tabs, but
it seems only possible to add items from the existing hotkey options -
which (as far as I can tell) do not include a "Move Tab" option ...

Here's my current 2¢ for x² to consider ..
a hotkey to move tabs would enhance x²;
a hotkey to toggle viewing hidden files would enhance x²;
(see related post regarding XP/x² SuperHidden issue ...);
a way to go directly from 1 tab to any other would enhance x²;
functional keyboard "accelerators" in the XP SendTo menu of x² would enhance x²;
I know of at least 1 other (freeware) file manager with ALL those features ...
including the SendTo accelerators ...
I can't make enough of a point of how GREAT the SendTo keyboard accelerators are ...
