Windows Explorer taskbar icon shows x2 icon

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. I have icons for both Windows Explorer and x2 on my Taskbar.
Occasionally the Explorer icon turns into an x2 icon, making it appear as if Explorer has disappeared. Clicking the "x2" icon turns it back into Explorer, so it's no big deal, just confusing at times. I haven't seen any other reports of this. Has anyone else noticed this?
Fortunately, it's never happened in reverse, and I haven't seen this phenomenon with any other file managers. I have not set x2 to replace Explorer.
