I hope I'm not being a bit 'thick' here, but how do you open a new Xplorer2 window, as 'Window>Clone' just clones the current tab in the current pane & window?

Assuming you're using Single-Pane mode, look at the options under Tools -> Advanced Options -> Layout Settings (Tab) -> Single-Window Mode... specifically Open New Window, as opposed to Always use One Window.

Hmmm
I'm using a single window with dual-pane.

Single Window Mode is set to 'Always open new tabs in single window'
This produces the most of behaviour I desire (e.g. Clicking a folder on the desktop opens a new tab not a new instance of Xplorer2) apart from the ability to open 'on demand' a new window 'natively' from within Xplorer2.
It seems I can't have the best of both worlds.
:(

This isn't related Xplorer2 v2.5.0.0 so please move these posts.

I would be tempted to call this a bug, not least because it also disables/subverts the windows standard method of opening multiple instances by middle-mouse-clicking the taskbar item. It basically limits x2 to being a wholly single-window programme which is fine for opening desktop folders, but it should not interfere with cloning/instancing windows unrelated to that task. (We won't mention the obvious question as to why it's listed under "single-pane mode" when it influences things far beyond its described scope.)

so you want to have your pie and eat it? how's that possible? here are the workarounds:
1. clone a window of a DIFFERENT layout
2. use the /P command line switch

Congratulations! That's the first workaround you've had in 6.23 months that's actually acceptable (because it works, at least as far as allowing the taskbar-instancing to work [holding <Shift> whilst clicking, for those without a middle-mouse-button] and allowing open-in-new-tab to work as expected). Pity the plain-Clone option itself is still flawed.

Now, about your confusion relating to option-nomenclature and what "single" actually means despite being married...

While you can never have your pie and eat it, it is sometimes possible to have
the best of both worlds.

The /P workaround does sort of do the job but
the ability to open 'on demand' a new window 'natively' from within Xplorer2
would be better.

If you combine /P /M command switches don't forget the 'space' between switches or it won't work as expected.

The hassle with workarounds is the 'work' part of that word.

Also from the manual
By default, x² runs in a system resource-friendly
single process mode, even when you launch separate
instances. To force new instances to open as separate
processes, enter the /P argument.
Could this be a drawback in some circumstances?

I'm using 2502 and find it very smooth. I do miss the Windows Explorer feature where I can single-click on a filename to rename it. Can Xplorer2 be configured to do that?

Thanks. Yes it does. I found the option label confusing, but this does indeed fix my problem.

One serious problem I just discovered in 2502 is that I have a desktop shortcut to an FTP site. With Windows Explorer active, I can double-click on this shortcut and open the FTP site. With xplorer2 active, when I double-click on this shortcut, multiple xplorer2 windows open but none of them completely, and the program hangs. This is also true if I click on the FTP site in NetHood, although here the program simply hangs.

In Windows Explorer, I am able to click on the FTP site listing in the tree view, and the FTP site contents will open in the file pane, so I'm able to get to the FTP site contents in WIndows Explorer, but I can't get there via xplorer2. Any ideas or suggestions?

xplorer2 can handle FTP only via a path like this
ftp://username:password@ftpsite.com
how did you create a shortcut to the ftp folder?

This works fine in Windows 7. The problem occurs using xplorer2 v2502 in XP/SP3l I tried turning off my anti-virus. Here's how I set up the shortcut:

Double-clicked on Network Neighborhood, double-clicked on Add Network Place, which opens "Add Network Place" Wizard, then provide the FTP site info and uncheck "Allow anonymous access." This creates a shortcut that, when double-clicked, asks for the site password.

No problem doing this with Windows Explorer.
