Audio Preview Options?

Post by supster »

Hi,  first of all great product,  its just about replaced Winexplore for me

question or suggestion:

One of the main reasons I'm using X2 is to preview and sort small WAV and AIFF files (drum samples).   It was recommended to me for that purpose.

The preview lets me audition the sample, the dual pane and other features let me sort

However the default plugin for preview is Windows Media player, which has two problems:

1 - There is a totally useless video screen that takes up space

2 - There is a 2 - 3 second pause while it "connects" (to find a codec?) and therefore slows down the whole process.

Too long when previewing hundreds of files

Changing the default preferences for WAV and AIFF in Windows doesnt allow me to change the preview to a smaller,  *faster* app to do this

Is there a way to change the default plugin for this?  MIME type maybe? and how

or

Can you add this functionality into the product if we cant?

thanks again
.

to be frank i know nothing about audio preview
x2 just integrates a windows service (WMP) that's installed on most PCs
however, i've just checked a few wavs and the delay bringing up the next sound is minimal (<half second). Perhaps WMP is trying to figure out codecs so the delay is unavoidable!

I just tried this on my system where Apple Quicktime is installed. Here the xplorer2 preview uses the quicktime player and plays wav files almost immediately. So maybe it could help if you would install Quicktime.

Huh?  I thought x2 was 'hard-wired" to use WMP in the preview.  How did you get it to use Quicktime?

eso, are you sure??? Nikos, is that possible??? If yes, maybe Media Player Classic can be somehow "embeded" :)

hmm no Quicktime is definitely installed.   I have plenty of options to choose from (wav players) if x2 would allow me to change the preference

it would really help out alot because a 1 - 2 second pause when you have thosands of samples to go thru really adds up  :?

Would you believe BOTH?
I just updated my QuickTime (which I almost never use) and opened the 'Normal' QuickView pane (which I also almost never use) and found that QuickTime plays WAV files and MOV files there :!: :D
... but the 'Draft' QuickView pane uses WMP exclusively. :|

So it seems that the 'Normal' QVpane tab invokes the default player registered for the file extension, not necessarily WMP.  :o

QT is set as my default player and x2 uses it (Windows XP).

Yes, I am sure :-) And Quicktime is not registered as my default player. Based on what the others described here it seems as if x2 is using a browser plugin (probably from IE) for the preview. Then using Media Player Classic wouldn't be possible (because it has no browser plugin).

hm... shame that MPC cannot be "part" of xplorer2 :(

btw, nothing happens on my system when switch to "normal" preview: just blank grey area! Same is for both audio and video files!

- default audio player: Winamp 5.1 Lite
- default video player: Media Player Classic 6.484

"normal" quickview tab is just internet explorer
whatever plugin is setup to play media in IE will show in x2 too
