File Rename not working

Post by wperkins99 »

Running version 1.0.0.1

I am unable to rename a file. F2 does not work; Rt-click "rename" does not work; "File"-"Rename" does not work. I notice that I get an "hourglass" for a split second, and then nothing.

Ctrl-F2 works just fine.

In the file pane, I cannot rename a directory.

However, in the Tree View pane, F2 works perfectly, and I can rename a directory.

Any of this make sense?

Running Windows 2000. My file manager of choice, 2xExplorer, works just fine.

It's in all folders.

Followup:

When I press F2, I get the Windows "error" beep.

I noticed in the "Help" drop-down that there is a "Last error" selection. When I click it the following message is displayed:

"This column cannot be renamed in place; please put Name column first
Windows error=5; access is denied."

That has me a little confused - I haven't changed the arrangement in the File Panes from the way it was when I installed the program - the Name column IS 1st... Maybe this error message has nothing to do with my problem, I don't know...

Does this help?

The error message indicates that you have somehow got a column other than the stock "Name" column at the first position in your file pane(s).
It may be the "Full Name" from an earlier install, & the update has honored your previous preferences.
Or there may be a hidden column (zero width) in first position.

Use the "Columns" toolbar button (or Alt+K, or r-click on a pane column header) to bring up the "Select columns" dialog; then pick "Name [S]" and place it in the first column.
If my guess is right, that should take care of your problem.

That was the problem.

In my "Columns" I had "Full Name (S)" instead of "Name (S)" in Column #1. As soon as I replaced it with "Name (S)", F2 began working.

Interesting that "rename" (F2) doesn't work with "Full Name (S)" in xplorer² Professional. Oh, well, the problem is solved anyway...

if you want your full name and plain name columns to coincide, you just need to clear "hide extensions for known file types" from your folder options (control panel)

That's how I currently have my Folder Options set.

At any rate, "Name (S)" works just fine for me (visually, I can't tell the difference between the two).

I want to thank both of you for your speedy response to my posts.

I have been using 2xExplorer since version 0.99, dating back to early 1999, and it has always seemed to withstand attempts by other file managers to supplant it as my file manager of choice... It looks like xplorer² Professional will probably change that. Thanx for the good work.

The only noticeable difference you may see is in the sort order:

[edit]
Name [S] is ordered by what looks like an ASCII sort, after converting the names to lowercase values.
{this is slightly different from when I last checked a couple of months ago. Thanks, nikos :) } [/edit]

The other Names are sorted by a lexicographal? rule, also case-insensitive, but which puts non-alphameric characters in a different order (and is a bit more time consuming due to its complexity).
