Error on Install
When I tried to install the new build 1002 free version I get an error message saying it cannot write the file, so it will not update. Any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks,
Sperry

Nikos thanks for your reply. I have been using these products of yours since 2xExplorer and then through most of the betas of xplorer2. I have never had this problem till now.
I close xplorer2 and go through windows explorer to install. There are no ghosts of xplorer2 running.
I am running windows 2000 with admin privileges. I install all of my programs to a seperate partition (D:\) but like I said I have never had any problem before.
You can view a screenshot of the error message at this link:

I cannot duplicate the reported error ...
updating from Lite[1.0.0.1] to [1.0.0.2]
everything worked without a hitch for me.
(on w2000, sp4 installing to default location:
C:\Program Files\zabkat\xplorer2_lite\
)
[edit/add:]
sperry,
Is this by any chance your first x2-Lite install -- on top of old x2 alpha/beta configuration?
If so, you might want to delete the old registry keys & try again.
(prob. not related, but just a thought)

Nikos (and sperry), probably there is a copy of X² running, because that's the same error you get when that's the case.nikos wrote:that error indicates you can't write on that folder for one reason or other
please try a different folder or partition
Maybe my suggestion here resolve installation conflict when X² is still running can resolve these problems in the future??

Thank you all for your replies to this problem.
After I responded to the first reply from Nikos I had to leave for the day and shut my computer down. When I returned I checked my email and found the replies. So I immediately tried the install again and it performed perfectly.
So apparently the problem had to be another instance of xplorer2 running and when I shut down it terminated. However, for some reason I did not see it today when I checked the task manger.
Great program you have here Nikos. I have tried a lot of these and yours is the best as far as I am concerned.

Nikos, please please pretty please can we have a zip file download of xplorer2.
When I realised there was a new version out (after reading some of the posts here), I immediately rushed to the download page and grabbed it. For a moment I thought, great, its a zip! But inside was the installer version.
There are a couple of reasons I'd like to get this great program in zip format.
1 - I install to a different location than the "Program Files" default, and also have my start menu shortcuts organised in a different way. This means that, for me, the best way to update a previously installed program is to rename the existing install folder (eg, xplorer2_lite-old) and unzip the new files into a new folder with the same name as the original (eg xplorer2_lite). That way I don't have to go and delete all the new shortcuts the installer creates. Also, if I don't like the new version (doesn't apply in your case, of course
), I can easily revert to the old one.
2 - Because your program is so good I keep it running all the time. Like some of the folks here, I too didn't think and attempted to launch the installer from within xplorer2. Maybe the zip file would help solve this problem for those, like myself, who are updating rather than installing for the first time.
Hope u don't think I'm moaning about this - xplorer2 is a great program and I'm extremely grateful you released a free version whatever format it comes in. And its just great that we can come on this forum and ask you about it too....
kind regards - wavy c

You can install into a different folder (it can be changed during installation). Each subsequent install will use this alternative location without having to change that each time.
You can install without creating shortcuts (also optional in the installation process).
So there's really no need for a zip distribution.
In your case it's even easier, since you only have to rename your old folder, use the installer from within X² (because you renamed the folder beforehand, it won't complain that files cannot be overridden) and do not create any shortcuts (not in start menu and not on desktop/quick start bar) and you're done.
Again, no need for a zip file. Installing can't be any easier!!
[Edit:add]Just saw Nikos' post. It seems your wish is granted
Still, above procedure will do the trick just as elegantly as unzipping in a new folder

Tnx for replying JRz
I can see you have read my earlier post carefully and understood the situation very well!
Actually, your solution is pretty much what I ended up doing. I renamed the existing x2 folder and installed into a newly created one with the original name. Unfortunately, in my haste to try out the new x2
I neglected to uncheck the options not to create new start menu/quick launch icons. The quick launch was ok, it just overwrote the previous one, and I just had to remove the extra start menu one.
However, I was more concerned about overwriting the reg entries. Although this does not appear to happen (my preferences were still intact), doing all this from a zip file just seems a better solution.
I guess I just prefer zip files because of bad experiences with other programs. Very nice of Nikos to cater to folks like me!
