Quick Viewer/Thumbnail broken on NT?

Post by hpp3 »

Okay I've done a search and there is no other answer so I'll ask the question. I'm on Windows NT that might be the problem :) All I get in the little Quick Viewer window is hex gibberish except for .txt files are fine. I've seen mentioned on other posts something about adjusting the file size limits in Tools->Options. Here's the stick; I go to Tools->Options and the "Thumbnails" box is greyed out! What happen?
Thanks in advance.

hmm... It appears I do not have Quickview and it's libraries installed. Any suggestions? Alternatives? I can live without thumbnails, but they would be nice.

@ Quickview and its libraries - Are we on the same page?
(The Quickview I am aware of is a DOS-based media viewer/player.)

What you should have is Windows Media Player v6 or later
and Microsoft Internet Explorer v3 or later
(surprisingly, they do have some useful functions, which x2 uses)
If you 'lost' the desktop update when uninstalling MS Internet Explorer 4.0 (or from other software installed after NT sp4 that replaced system files),
you can reapply the desktop update as follows (per MS Knowledge Base article 194965)
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and click Add/Remove.
3. Select Add the Windows Desktop Update Component from Web Site.

Hope this helps.

PS: what version shell do you have on your system?
(check shell32.dll properties)

NT Workstation 4.0 SP6 Build 1381
IE 5 6.0.2800.1106

The thing about the Quickview is I did a search on the internet for "thumbnails disabled" or something like that (it's been a while...) and found plenty of posts referring to "quikview.exe" being in C:\windows\system\viewers. I have no such thing at all. (on NT it is C:\winnt\system32\viewers) I know that this method of viewing was discarded for something different in later versions of Windows, so it is the only reason I can see for the thumbnail capability to be totally disabled for me (though I suspect I may be totally wrong). I still have Media Player 4 as I don't use this machine for any multimedia purposes and the system is configured with a tight root drive so I'm none too hot to do much upgrading. If that's the problem, it's OK; I can live without thumbnails and at least I'd know why

ok, now I understand ...
Your WMP being only at v4 on that machine is the most likely reason for no thumbnail or audio/video quick viewer functionality with x2. :(

what you need is the "active desktop update"
i'm sure you won't find it from micro$oft any more!
i can't even find patches for IE5.5!

Yep, it looks like I'd have to do some IE version gymnastics for that one, which I am not in the mood for. Oh well, x2 still rocks the pants off anything else.
Thanks a bunch for all the help, cats.
