cannot create new folders
Does anyone know how to create a new folder on a disk drive? if I click the drive and then click actions/new folder, or hit F8, it just beeps at me and does nothing.

If it beeps, there should also be a message displayed momentarily in the status bar (or prominently in a message box). The message should provide a clue about the problem. It may be that you do not have permission to create a folder at that location.
btw: Please post your File Manager questions in the appropriate "matching" forum elsewhere on the board, and describe the product and version {xplorer2 v1003, xplorer2 Lite v1002, etc.}

Thanks so much for your help--I was in the tree view. I am still used to Windows Explorer where you just use the menu in "tree view" to create a new folder. BTW do you know why it is not allowed to create a new folder in tree view? It seems like a logical place to do it.fgagnon wrote:If it beeps, there should also be a message displayed momentarily in the status bar (or prominently in a message box). Belive me, I am not trying to be argumentative.nikos wrote:because it is rather ambiguous where you want the folder created
But in tree view, if I click on a folder and it is highlighted and I then say to create a folder, it is very obvious to me that I want it created as a subfolder under the highlighted folder. That is how explorer works. I think it is intuitively obvious. Don't you?

"Me too"
Hitting F8 I heard the music but never could find the "New Folder" --of course after spending time in the forum, it has been revealed. Now I too am wondering (as an ex-Explorer user) why I can't make a new folder in Tree View....... found myself going into that old Explorer to make the New Folder then getting back with Ex2 which looks very promising and feels "comfortable" and mostly intuitive so far..... Tnx

Until this gets addressed you can hit TAB, then hit F8 and type a name for the folder followed by Enter and finally hit Ctrl+TAB to get back to the treeview. Much easier than revving up old M$ explorer, going to the right folder in the tree (which is a pain anyway, too much clicks needed most of the time) and then getting back to X²
(whatever that last action is good for I wonder, because you probably want to do something with or in the newly created folder, which is probably most conveniently done in the file pane, not the tree view

Correct!
A much better way is to select-
1. Keep the tree synchronized with the folder panes.
2. Automatically shift focus to view (i.e., active folder pane) after activation.
(Both options are available in Tools | Options menu; Window tab.)
Thus you will be able to work in the folder pane without getting stuck on the tree. At the same time the tree will help you change directory rapidly.
