Questions, Suggestions

Post by betatester »

I've been a long time user of 2xexplorer and now xplorer. Few things that I would like to ask if they already exist, if not then maybe for future versions.

1. When sorting by modified date, is there an option to "always list folders first", so they are listed before files and not sorted in the middle of the hundreds of files.

2. Ability to customise the location of the preview, quick viewer box. I want to move it to the right, or have it floating so it's always on top of the xplorer2 window.

3. Somewhere where I can list the extensions that I want quick viewer to work on.

4. When I doubeclick some files it launches but then xplorer2 does not give up the focus, so it's already pressed in the taskbar. So when i have to come back to it, i have to click somewhere else in the taskbar first to unpress it then click it again. This happens with URL files. Bug? :?

That's all I can think of for now. If someone can answer if all this already exists or what they think would be great. :)

1. tools | options /window\ Folders sorted [separately]

2. not other than described in user manual chapter 3 (pp 16-17)

3. not that I know of currently

4. try: tools | options /general\ - untick "Eat the first mouse click..."

PS: nikos is on vacation until October, so we will mostly be helping each other for the rest of September (nikos indicated he would be "checking in from time to time but irregularly")

Thanks fgagnon. Your suggestion for #1 worked.

I didn't know nikos was on vacation, for the other things I guess they're going to have to wait a bit. :P

Please try describing your #4. issue again, including why it is a problem.
{I really didn't understand the first time, but replied with a wild guess for something to try even tho I didn't "get" the issue. :( }

When I click on a URL link in a folder, and after browsing in IE come back to x2, I see the URL link is still highlited, but I do not understand why that would be a problem.

[edit] PS - I have been trying to imagine what it is about x2 you were describing for this #4 item, when it ocurred to me you may have been speaking of the Windows taskbar. If that is what you mean, I can report that on my system (XP-pro) that the situation you describe does not occur. What is your OS?

Hi fgagnon, what I meant with issue #4 is indeed the taskbar. Here is what happens.

I double click an URL file in x2. Internet explorer launches and opens the URL BUT the taskbar still shows x2 as being the program you are on. The x2 taskbar entry is pressed just as if you were on it. The reason this is a problem is because now if I want to go back to x2, I have to click somewhere else on the taskbar first - to unpress/unselect the x2 from the taskbar, THEN select x2.

So it's kind of annoying. This only happens with URL files so I am beginning to think maybe it is how my URL files are associated or something to do with that.

One other thing I was wondering about was the FTP function. When you go to an FTP location, does it disconnect immediately and then reconnect on your next command or you have to do something to disconnect? I have tried to avoid using FTP from x2 for this reason because I'm not sure how this works. Any ideas? It's also tricky to get out of an FTP location in the pane, lots of not found errors even though you are trying to access local files.

okay, we're on the same page for your #4, but I can offer no solution. There seems to be an issue with how x2 and IE notify your OS about who's on top when x2 hands off the URL desitination to IE for browsing.
I don't know enough about what goes on with that exchange to figure it out. (& when nikos gets back from vaca, you might want to tell us your OS & version of IE)

Regarding FTP: x2 simply plugs into the vanilla FTP capability of IE to provide this function. Not everybody has had success using it. The first 'test' should be whether you can visit the ftp sites of interest just using IE. If not, then x2 won't help.
If you can, then you should also be able to use x2 for ftp to those sites just as easily, & with the benefit of not having to 'leave' the x2 virtual environment for file transfers.

But if you need to do a lot of ftp work, then it would be better to use a dedicated ftp engine, IMO.

& if you want to pursue ftp with x2, please indicate your OS & IE versions. The limitations may be there.

I'm using Win 98 SE with IE 6.0.2600.

I know others have had some problems, and I have as well, changing back to the local folders once after you are in FTP mode so just reporting this for nikos incase it's a bug.

I don't have a problem using the FTP, just wondering how it works - whether it disconnects from the server automatically or creates a new connection each time I change a folder etc. If you don't know, don't worry, i'll just wait for nikos to answer it. :)

Hi, betatester,
I took time tonight to try & duplicate your #4 on my win98 (plain, not SE) machine with IE 6.0.2800
I could not get your reported problem to occur.
IE properly got the taskbar focus every time.
So just one click to get x2 back.
