I originally posted this problem back in Aug. on another thread. I downloaded the debug version , but it never happened to fail when I was running the debug version (I still used the non-debug version most of the time, since it was configured the way I wanted it). I also use IZArc and the error does seem to have occurred when I had used IZArc, so that would appear to be the culprit. I've just learned to live with occasionally having to respond to the message after I exit, since it doesn't do any harm.

I have the same problem, and my one is generated from the shell explorer extension of Beyond Compare:
http://www.scootersoftware.com/
(I disabled it, and I got no more errors...)
Nevertheless, my question is this: I do not have this problem in explorer...
So, if the shell extension is buggy, shouldn't it appear also in explorer??
Thanks...

It's strange, because I should actually see the problem when shutting down (once in several times, maybe..., but I should see "something"). Instead, I never saw this before...
Isn't there any way to run the extension in a "separate" process??

there's somewhere an option (can't remember, must be in folder options) that you can run explorer in a separate process and you can test whether it crashes or not
but even if it doesn't this doesn't immediately put x2 on the spot
the windows shell team program explorer to withstand silly errors made by amateur shell extension programmers
x2 does the same to a large extent but clearly there are errors bigger than others
i'll have a look at this program to see what could be the case and if it can be corrected

The apps "enabler" and "sustain" might help from this website.

Let you take a closer look at what is happening with your running apps.

Nikos,
It could very well be a XP-only issue. My OS is XP SP2.
I was experiencing the error mentioned in the initial post when exiting xplorer2, just part of the time.
As I mentioned, since switching from IZArc to TUGZip, no more errors.
I don't recall seeing the error until after I installed Service Pack 2.

I just got an error from:
xplorer2_commport
The program accessed the memory at address 0xyyyyyyy. The memory could not be read.
with the sequence of actions described above.
Furthermore, I could not close the program, since I got an "infinite" number of those errors (i.e., if I click on OK, I get another identical error).

Just found out another point: using xplorer2, I saw that the problem still exists, even if the Beyond Compare Shell extension is disabled (it's only "rare")
So, I tried to download ShellExView (from http://www.nirsoft.net/) and disable all my extensions.
I finally found that the one causing the problem is the one of "Attribute Changer"
http://webplaza.pt.lu/public/rpetges/
Hope this helps find / fix the problem.
