Problems with Save Layout... option

Post by mikeopacic »

I am a lomg time user of 2x Explorer & have recently updated to the new Explorer2 Pro (latest 1.1.0.2).

I am having a problem with saving layouts from the 'Window' menu. I have two panes side by side horizontally and ensure that the two folders I want to feature in each pane are selected and then go to Window/Save layout..., give the layout a name & description and all appears to go well.

BUT when I try to action the new layout from the 'Windows' menu it starts up a new Explorer2 instance but it does not display the folder panes which were current when I originally saved it.

Am I misunderstanding this feature or is anyone else experiencing this too?

Not sure if this will help (& no time to test it at the moment), but ...
try again after UN-checking "Save settings on exit"
That may keep x2 from 'updating' your layout with what it thinks is your latest preference.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately it made no difference - does this feature work ok for you? - maybe you can let me know when you get the chance to test it!

Mike,

After checking for myself & now that I stop to think about it, I recall there have been some complaints along this line.
It seems the layouts were not designed to remember initial folders, but rather just the on-screen positioning, customized toolbars, & such.

When I checked for myself, I got a flaky response in that the left pane initial folder was remembered & returned persistantly when I called the layout from a running instance of x2 -- even when I tried to change it; but the right pane was updated to the folder where I had left it when I quit the view.  :?
I also tried various combinations of save settings now & quitiing all instances of x2 before restarting my default tabbed view & then invoking the 'test' view from it.

Bottom line is that if you always want to start x2 at a particular spot, use the command line switches as described in the Quick start guide.
or if you want to have different folders quickly available when x2 is already open, you can create tabs for them.

I don't use custom views much any more myself, except I do have one side-by-side dual pane view and one above/below dual pane view defined.   I keep my most frequently visited folders on various 'tabs' except exotic folders which require many-click or addressbar typing to acces. Those I have created 'bookmarks for and put on a toolbar.

I hope that helps -- even if I didn't solve your problem. ;)

Thanks for that confirmation and the suggested workarounds - at least I now know it's not just a problem on my system:-)

Cheers

exactly right
for specific folders you either use the command line or the new folder groups feature from Customize menu. I wouldn't recommend clearing "saving settings on exit" checkbox since then nothing would be saved (e.g. new commands, toolbars, bookmarks etc)
