Different HTML preview?

Post by jirkah »

Hi,

I am considering to switch from Total Commander, but I have two main problems:

1) Is it possible to replace the IE based html previewer to something else? E.g. the simple html preview in lister from total commander is great. Why (1) I dumped IE for Firefox for security issues, if I used IE in xplorer2 it would no make much sense. (2) The preview tries to get info from the internet anytime there is some external link, which is really annoying.

2) Is it possible to change key assignments? I am used to have new directory under F7 and delete under F8, xplorer uses different assignments.

Just a note on inconsistency (maybe there is some logic behind it, that I missed) - why is the set of basic operations with files (New, Delete, Copy, Rename) spread over three menus (File, Edit, Actions)?

Otherwise it is a great product, thanks

nikos left a post saying that he is taking a break to celebrate for a couple of days, so I'll try to address your comments, jirkah.

on 1) - [deleted erroneous info  ]

on 2) - As far as I know, not without special tools like resource hacker (For example, see: here)

on 'inconsistency' -  Actually it's only one menu item (New) that is out of place compared to the windoze Explorer; but the order of the menu topics is rearranged according what nikos has explained as being more functional for real work (in his analysis).

I hope that helps.
Please continue to post your opinions and suggestions.  x2 is clearly still a work in-process, and will not achieve it's full potential without user input.
:D

x2 doesn't use IE for previews
moreover it doesn't attempt to go online for HTML either
on what system did you observe this?

I've also had occasional attempts to connect to the Internet when previewing HTML documents. I cannot find any that do this at the moment, but if I find one I'll obviously give you details. This is on XP home.

I use Win XP SP 2.

Here is a screenshot showing that it really tries to go online (if I block it it tries couple more times for that file):

And here is the html file:

Jirka,
That file has javascript cookie testing & on-line advertising links for "the Economist" embedded in it.  So I suspect that it would be the javascript in the file that's calling IE.
Maybe nikos can explain why xplorer2 is showing up as the caller.

PS - the source of your file (The Economist) links to ad.doubleclick.net which can install tracking cookies on your computer via the embedded javascript in the file.    :(

You may want to search other downloaded html files for little unwanted javascript packages and the embedded links to ad-warez.  [hit F3 and search for "http://" and take note of the sites following the "//" ]

I think whether one 'sees' it or not depends on the internet security settings being used and on the brand of antivirus.  & maybe your default browser, too.  Some configurations may block the attempt to install the doubleclick tracking cookie silently; others will just accept the cookie & continue with no complaints.

PS - The example file with embedded javascript & ad.doubleclick.net links doesn't appear to connect to the internet for me, either.

but none of these are outgoing (don't know what they are about in any case). Are they preview-related or just firewalls gone mad?

yeah, I know they are not outgoing...

I see that when I select some .HTML file, in which there is some "out" link (eg. code for counter)

x2 did the best it could
it told windows "local content only please" but XP somehow managed to kak it up. I don't understand why XP attempts to access the internet so often (and i mean without using x2 on htmls)

is this "sagonet" contained in the html you're trying to view or do you have some sort of trojan problem?
