Limiting open Xplorer2 windows

Post by Henk »

Hi,
I've just begun to try out this file manager, and it really looks like one of the best (if not the best) I've ever seen.
I've one question though.
When using Xplorer2, I soon find my taskbar cluttered with a whole bunch of Xplorer2 buttons. Because every time I choose a different layout (or is it folderset? sorry, I've yet to get used to the terminology) from the main menu bar, the program tends to open a new window, instead of replacing the already open window's contents with the newly requested view. Also, if I click an Xplorer2 desktop shortcut, this always opens a new window instead of reusing an existing one. Meaning that after a brief while, I have something like ten Xplorer2 windows/taskbar buttons in a row... Not very handy.
So my simple question is: is there a way to force a limit of 1 (just ONE) to the number of open Xplorer2 windows, iow. to always re-use an existing window instead of keeping creating new ones?
Sorry if I've overlooked something like this in the settings, maybe someone can tell me if there is such an option hidden somewhere. If it does not exist, please consider this a feature request!
Thanks, Henk

there is no way to reuse a x2 window
but you can limit your windows if you use tabs and browse folders from within x2

Here's a solution...

OK, thanks for your info.
I've  made a temporary solution (until this is included in the program itself, which imho would be nice) in the form of a compiled AU3 script for shortcuts. I'll post it here, for maybe other people with the same working method as mine (wainting only ONE main filemanager screen, ONE filemanager taskbar button) may find it useful. You can download the small exe + script source file + readme from:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~vsetten/1xplo2.zip
If you run 1xplo2.exe without parameters, it'll tell you how to use it.
If you use it in Xplorer2 desktop or quicklaunch shortcuts, you will never get a confusing stack of multiple Xplorer2 windows. Clicking such a shortcut will open the Xplorer2 window indicated in the shortcut command line, but at the same time it will close any other Xplorer2 windows that happened to be left open.
This way, you'll allways have one main Xplore2 window to work in, and only one Xplorer2 button in your taskbar.

-- unfortunately, it doesn't work with x2-pro (which has the same new window creation issue), and although it closes extra x2-Lite windows it doesn't doesn't maximize the window, nor restore it, nor place it 'on top'.  :(
I tested it in XP-pro sp2.

[edit/add:]
But a check on win98 has this util working ok with both Lite & Pro, including closing multiple instances of the other, before starting one instance & window of the intended version. -- but still not restoring the x2 window to be on top.
(So the problem with Pro on XP may be related more to it being the unicode version than with it being Pro.)

I'll give this little utility a half-thumb up; but others may find that it fits their need quite well. ;)
