Remeber the subfolder on a drive

Post by HomerS »

Hello,

can I setup my x²lite that it remembers the last subfolder it was in?
For example:

I'm in the following subfolder:
D:\Test\TEst2\Test3

Then I change the drive with Ctrl+Shift+C to drive c

Now I go back using Ctrl+Shift+D

now x²lite is in D:\

I think it's better when it remeber the last position of each drive.

Is this already a feature? And can I setup this or is this no feature?

Thanks for response

for that you'll have to type d: (note: no backslash in the end)

X2 Lite and Pro already have this feature.

What you are doing is selecting the root drive with the CTRL+SHIFT+(drive letter) combo.

If you want to go to the last folder then do the following;
  • Press Backspace to go down a level.
Press Alt+Left to go back one, in the history.
Shift+Right click on the title bar on the active pane, and select the folder you want from the list.
Alt+F2 to get the same history listing.

But thats not what I want i don't want to go to the last folder. I want that when I change the drive from d to c for example that i can move between some folders on c and then when i go back to drive d that I'm in the same folder as I left. I don't want only go back in History

Use Shift+TAB to get to the address bar directly (Ctrl+TAB takes you to the tree view if it is visible, so then it takes two times Ctrl+TAB to get to the address bar)

Good luck on finding a better filemanager HomerS. Let us know if you succeed (we probably won't hear from HomerS again ;) )

My preference is to bring back the functionality of the drive root button that was in 2X (the button at the top of the drive bar). Then, the user could decide if they want ctrl+shift+drive letter to go to the root or the last folder access on the drive. (Personally, I would want this to go to the last folder accessed, as I did in 2X.) Making this configurable in the registry would make me happy (and possibly users like HomerS).

In the mean time, I've learned to live with shift+tab x: enter. I'm sure not giving up x2 for this minor annoyance!

'much better' ?? I seriously doubt that. But it is all about what you think is important which makes it a good filemanager (in your world). Personally, I like fast, robust and keyboard controlled (no mouse needed).

I'll have a look at freecommander (as will many of us I presume). Will get back to you on this :)

I'm happy you found what you were looking for ;)

Hmm, have taken a look at freecommander. I'm not impressed. Haven't found any improvements over (looked for 5 minutes, so might have missed something :) )

Did find several features missing from it though. For instance:

- no tabs
- no selectable columns in detail mode
- only limited filtering possibilities for files (only executables or documents)
- no address bar with smart history (can search through history by just specifying any part of previously visited folders and hitting up-arrow)

freecommander is wasting valuable space on screen by:
- drivebar (or drive selection dropdown) appears twice (for each pane separately). One is enough

Can't really say much about speed and robustness after examining it only briefly of course, but noticed a clear difference when accessing network drives for instance. is much faster in displaying contents of such drives)

When comparing to X² Pro it lacks even more (obviously), like scrap panes, extensive (extremely fast) search capabilities. But then again, X² Pro is not for free :)

If the navigation problem is your only reason to leave X² Lite alone HomerS, I can only say: keep your eyes peeled for new versions of . It might happen :) The drive bar (another reason you might prefer freecommander over ) is already planned and maybe it will behave like you want (going back to the drive means also ending up in the folder last visited on that drive). You never know...

no selectable columns in detail mode
It work's in the prev. Version. I also contact the developer. He said it's a bug fixed in the next version.
only limited filtering possibilities
You can define your own filter when you press the Filter-Icon and click on Set Filter
freecommander is wasting valuable space on screen by:

I overlapped x2 and fc and the Filewindows of fc are bigger.
f the navigation problem is your only reason to leave X² Lite alone HomerS, I can only say: keep your eyes peeled for new versions of X².
Other reasons are that with freecommander i can define Programfavorites of programs I often use too execute.[/img]
