Xplorer2 to the top: some improvement suggestions

Post by Daan »

I understand that you guys love to hear good ideas for your program. Here are a few:

Preview also for MSOffice docs (without saving those docs differently than standard).

Two treepanes in dual pane view.
Each file pane has its own attached treepane. (make this an option to the user to switch this on/off).

Disable auto-selecting first item in file pane. Annoying when changing sort order: the auto-selected item keeps being selected, which means that you're not looking at the top of the file list after sorting on last modified date for example.

Apply different (custom) layout to current xplorer2 window instead of creating a new instance.

Place clickable path inside the file pane on the tab if tabs are used. (Or let the user choose via options/register).

Clicking on a tab of the inactive file pane makes the inactive file pane the active file pane (or "moves the focus", I don't know how this is called).

Double clicking on the tab removes the tab. (or make it an option)

Remember second file pane tabs.
The tabs of the second file pane are forgotten when switching to single treepane and then back to dual pane. This is annoying.

Mouse guestures for tabs
(look at Maxthon web browser! www.maxthon.com. They did a perfect job on this!)

Make button "Copy all file pane settings from the other file pane." To copy all the tabs and current directories on the tabs and all the view settings from the other file pane to the active file pane.

Spit file pane to see all tabs at once.
When I have two tabs on a file pane, I can hit a button on the button bar to show the contents of both tabs side by side.
(Idea from Notetab Pro www.notetab.com).

Change appearance of custom buttons on button bar. I have lots of external programs defined as commands (eg '> notepad.exe') and I put their buttons on the button bar, but they all look the same. It needs mouse-overs to identify the functions of the buttons. It would be nice to place the program Icon belonging to the program on the button. In the window where the commands are created, add a 'Browse Button Icon' botton. When no icon is selected, the standard hammar is shown.

Change the way the focus is handled in case the treepane is enabled.
It is not logical that it's not possible to change the view of the file pane while a directory in the treepane is selected, like sort order or list style or custom lay-outs. First you have to click in the file pane which is already active, but only doesn't have the focus. For the regular user, 'focus' is not relevant.

Make all the registry options available in the options dialog. (I understood that this is a lot of work, but sooner or later this has to happen to really rule the world of filemanagers).

Some extra options that should be added to x2 are options that allows the user to change the pane backgroud color, font color and style(bold, italic etc.), the cursor color and the text style in menus. This will make x2 more accesible for people with eye problems.

Thanks

you can change fonts and colors through tools | options
the forthcoming v1.2 will have more options available straight from the gui (as opposed to registry tweaks)
