1. Put an icon on the status bar that says whether or not you are in sticky mode. Ideally, I would prefer one always on that said sticky mode or non sticky mode.
2. Add a new hot key that would turn sticky mode on if off and leave it on if on and then select the item. You could use this single hot key by itself to build a selection with single keystroke without having to worry about whether sticky mode was on or off.
The ideal key for this would be the numeric keypad *. The "*" symbol says mark and that would be the function of the key. The key would do what one might think the designers of the keyboard intended that it do, select items from lists. To avoid conflict with present usage of the key, it might be better to allow the user to choose a key in preferences.
This would provide the world functionality not seen, to my knowledge, since the WordPerfect DOS Office / Shell File Manager circa 1990, which I still use because it provides instant viewing of and searching in text files and WordPerfect 5 documents.
