Not really ... just cosmetic, as functionality is not compromised.
I have seen this on a resource-starved system when available memory is below some threshold. A default icon will be substituted for display of some items (it can also happen with desktop icons).
Try quitting all apps (or rebooting) and starting x2 by itself.
You should find that things get pretty again.

You're right,it's not a BIG problem. Thank you for your your answer but I don't think it will solve this little problem: this is a permanent look (even if ²plorer is the only application running (I do not count antivirus or some little resident memory programms I use). I've got 512 mo RAM (win xp sp1). The icons are visible in classic windows explorer.

Using a program like X-Setup you can adjust the default value Windows uses for icon caching. Sometime when a system has been running a while, the icon cache becomes exhausted, maybe this is what you are experiencing. Try rebooting to see if that resolves the problem. If it does, then you might have to tweak the registry setting responsible for icon caching.
Check your options. On the general tab, there is a drop down menu where you can select the icons thatare used. There are three options - Plain, Simple and Normal. The plain and simple used a limited icon set for showing files.
