Norton Says Packed.Adware

Post by bertradio »

The latest virus definitions from Norton identify the setup file within the install zip as "Packed.Adware". Same for the file Uninstall.exe.

Anyone know why?

This didn't happen until I downloaded the virus definitions dated 3/16/05. I know there is no spyware in x2. You might want to contact Norton and get this straightened out. Otherwise people using Norton will not want to use your product.

i have norton antivirus corporate edition 7.60.925 (engine version 4.1.0.15) and i just updated the virus definitions but still got no adware warning. You must have a later version of the program

i agree that these types are harming my business and i'll give them a piece of my mind pronto :)

This is a well known problem with some Norton AV (NAV) software. NAV detects the dll used to download the full manual as spyware or trojan (the free x2 doesn't have this problem). This can be fixed by upgrading your NAV. This dll does not contain any spyware code in it. The NSIS is an open source project so you can download the sources at nsis.sf.net and check.
Forthose who use NAV: This av can be tricked very easy (I did it) so please try another av (like Bitdefender)
Thanks

I've had the same problem using Norton System Works 2004 integrated virus scanner with definitions updated as of 17 Mar 05.

I went into configuration and excluded the files from future scans.

Incidentaly, the same problem occurs with ATI Catalyst video drivers.

the official reply from symantec's customer support is more or less "sorry, our bad" but that doesn't help much in terms of scaring my potential customers away
symantec wrote:A false positive, also known as a false detection or false alarm, occurs when an antivirus program detects a known virus string in an uninfected file. The file, while not infected with an actual virus, does contain a string of characters that match a string from an actual virus
this will certainly affect many shareware authors and there could be ground for litigation, unless symantec can sort it out

For more info try this link http://nsis.sourceforge.net/index.php?i ... tt_news=14. It is the official NSIS site.
As I wrote before this problem is only for the pro version (scan the lite and you'll get nothig) because the download feature is consider adaware.
Thanks

Norton did not complain at all about the new setup you posted. I am using NAV 2005 with 3/17/05 definitions.
