X2 Lite crashes - CD problem?

Post by montetrebol »

My X2 lite is acting verz weird. It is almost impossible to check the contents of my CD drive. A couple of days ago I tried to burn some files with InCD and the files didn't get burned and they disapeared from the HD. Since then X2 is very unstable and crashes very often, sometimes without doing anything with the CD drive. Do you have any idea of what is going on?

In my experience of working with Nero (including their inCD offering) and Roxio (directCD, etc.) there is a lot of incompatiblity between CD burning software and operating systems and CD burner hardware especially with the packet writing stuff like inCD & directCD.

And the older software doesn't work that well either -- especially if one is transferring files between different machines & OS's.

The issue is almost certainly not with x2.

editorial: Although things are better than they were a couple of years ago, I think we are still two generations of software/hardware development away from reliable casual CD burning and good cross-platform compatibility, not to mention immunity from coaster-creation.  :(

I realize this is not much help; but my advice is to be careful and go slowly. CD's are not speedy devices like hard drives; even though micro$oft tries to hide that fact by pre-caching the to-be-written content.
I have found that it is important to wait until the CD is really written, before ejecting it or going on to the next task. (PS: I have given up on using directCD and inCD to keep the size of my coaster collection from growing too rapidly.)

As far as x2 instability - It may be windoze trying to resurrect the incompletely written CD image (I've seen something like that once or twice & got it to stop by putting in the bad CD & just waiting for a long time for it to time out).

Is it only x2 that is unstable or winExplorer also (as it was in my cases)?

If only x2, I would try to reset the registry as follows:
1. - export registry keys (in case you want them back)
use Actions | Export settings ...
2. - with x2 shut down, use regedit to delete the xplorer2 keys under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc\
3. restart x2 & it will generate a new set of default settings.
4. If things are still kakked &/or you want your old settings back you can do that from win explorer (with x2 shut down) by d-click on the x2settings.reg key you exported in step 1.

damn CDs  :x
my work computer will invariably crash (x2, explorer and the whole windows) just with a hint of a faulty CD. Most of the time it won't even shut down!

i hope these flash memories put the final nail to that technology's coffin
