Hey Folks;
New IFilters are availabe from www.citeknet.com including support for rar files.
To find a file within an archive, I've had to enter the name of the file I am looking for in the containing text space in the Find Files and Folder window. You won't get a hit if you type the name of the file you are looking for (which is inside a rar file), if you type the name of the file in the named box. In addition, I have to check the archived content and check all files boxes. To speed up your searches, filter as much as possible. For example, enter *.rar as the name of the file if all you want is to look through are .rar files.
The IFilter works very well and it is free! Compare it to the $99 and $119 some folks are asking.
-Ric
p.s. There is also support for self-extracting compressed files in the form of .exe.

I know you can't divulge upcoming features given the competitive nature of shareware. Nevertheless, it would be great if your new search tool
1) integrated/extended the functionality of IFilters
2) integrated well with X2 such that searches could be saved as cida
3) saved cida files could be refreshed or updated
4) UI provided a list of check boxes of drop-down list of filters to improve search effeciency
Number 4 would be very similar to what you use now in x2 but imaging having a set of check boxes that would allow you to select the specific extension of the files your want to search withing (e.g., zip, rar, cab, etc.). Most everything else is very efficient as you have it. For example, you provide a drop-down list of recent search terms.
Looking forward to the new program!

CIDA is not specifically associated to hold results of a single search. for example, after getting the results, some items can be added/deleted manually. More than one searches can be merged in a single CIDA file.saved cida files could be refreshed or updated
Therefore, x2 as it buit today cannot guarantee the integrity of a CIDA file.
To provide what Ricmarte requested, the following changes are required in the scheme:
1. The search conditions must be attached to a CIDA file.
2. x2 must not allow manual changes to a CIDA file if it is associated with a search.
In other words, x2 has to create a special class of CIDA file devoted to searches.

Comments and XP Indexing service
Does any one know whether any ADS (specifically the user comment column) can be indexed for faster retrieval?
And if not so, could it be possible to write an IFilter for it?

Thanks for replying, Nikos, but it is not quite what I meant.nikos wrote:you mean you want it to show up faster in folder listings?
extracting comments is fairly fast, but it is done with lower priority
that's why the comment column comes up with a delay
Should have made myself clearer, probably - sorry.
In fact I really had two questions.
First question: I'd like to know whether what I write as an ADS (like the xplorer² file and folder comments) is indexable by the system's Win XP indexing service, and so consequently can be searched for by doing an index query? (Explorer² is indeed fast enough!)
Second question: If that is not the case, could it possible and worthwhile to make it work by supplying an installable Ifilter (like for the PDFs)?
My first question was a general one to all, while the second one definitely goes out to you!

Okay
Question one is answered :)
I am currently waiting for this sluggish bit of software to complete my index -- I'll be able to test if it indexes comments -- if ever it finishes indeed.....
Question two seems answered too, right ?
thanks Nikos .. I'll think about a faster server, if I find it works at all.
