How to rename files removing accents?

I have some folders with a lot of files that have accents in their names. I would like to know a quick method to rename all these files just removing the accents (i.e., replacing "á" with "a", replacing "é" with "e" and so on). Do you know how to do this?

I notice that when you use xplorer² Lite you do not see the accents in the names, but indeed the accents are still there.

A freeware called Lupas Rename 2000 can remove all accent marks from all selected files. (Use the checkbox near the right-hand bottom corner of its screen).

This utility can list files from a given top-level folder recursively. You can select some files out of this flattened list. The commands will work only on the selected files (the remaining files are unaffected).

The User's Manual lists a mass renamer called THE Rename, but it does not seem to have this feature...

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately this program is not working well on my computer. I can see on my screen (using Windows Explorer) that there are accents in some file names but when I use Lupas Rename 2000 and try to eliminate the accents the program tells me that there are no files having accents in their names. Does anybody have an idea about why this happens?

Perhaps you did not select the correct file (?)

Can you share the file? (if it contains sensitive info, you can replace the original contents with some "safe" text.)

For instance, I have just created (using windows explorer) a new file called "cartón.txt" and when I try to remove the accents it does not work.

Maybe the problem is with the codification that I am using, because although I see an accent it seems that my computer thinks that there is a different symbol.

I just carried out this experiment with your file name containing the accent:
1. Copied the name+extension onto my clipboard.
2. Created a new file using x2 PRO (by pressing F7),
3. Pasted this name in it.

This created a file with exactly the same name (with accent).

x2 PRO shows the accent in my NT4 PC.

Then I used Lupas Rename 2000 to remove accent. It successfully removes the accent.

So even if we assume that x2 Lite and PRO work differently, at least Lupas Rename works correctly with the name supplied by you...

After reading your message I have already checked that in normal situations it works because I have just tried in my old laptop that is based on spanish Windows XP Home and it works without problems.

However, when I use my desktop computer it does not work well. I guess that maybe the problem comes from the fact that it is based on japanese Windows XP Pro with the multilingual package (indeed I see the menus in spanish). This is why I think that maybe it is a configuration problem. Any suggestion about which can be the problem (and about possible solutions) is welcome.

x2 lite is an ansi application and fares very poorly with all sorts of accents and locale issues. The professional version can work unicode if your system supports it and breezes past all such problems
