nikos wrote:there is no problem with the code since i've just tried x2 on an XP/SP2 with icontweaker and all customized icons show fine, including those 0/2 you have problems with

so why it doesn't work for you? i'll have to digress...

ps try removing registry keys 0 & 2, then what happens?
(extract them first so you can restore them)
If I remove the 2 key, then xplorer² displays the default icon defined by the 0 key, as it should. If I remove both, then the Windows default icons are used. If both are defined then xplorer² continues to display icon 2 instead of icon 0 without fail.

I am sure that xplorer² is the issue here, since Explorer is always correctly displaying the assigned icons, but it's hard to understand what the difference is between your XP/SP2 and mine.   :eh:

explorer is hardly the benchmark, these guys cheat like crazy
what should clinch it is another explorer replacement e.g. 2xExplorer or any of the other thousands out there: if they fail then it's your setup otherwise it's x2

How exactly is Explorer 'cheating like crazy'?
what should clinch it is another explorer replacement e.g. 2xExplorer or any of the other thousands out there: if they fail then it's your setup otherwise it's x2
Every single other Explorer replacement I tried (and I tried several) did NOT display the MS-DOS program icon in place of the default (and that included your own 2xExplorer). I think the problem must be with xplorer²;  don't you now agree?

I've emailed Brian Harper the IconPackager developer for his thoughts, given that he probably knows more about Windows and icons than most people.

Would a debug build of x² that examined the goings on during the icon assignment help? If so, I'd be happy to give it a go.

here's a debug version you can try:
www.ps.ic.ac.uk/~umeca74/dbmon.zip

you said that both lite and pro version have this problem, right?

No, Lite doesn't respect the icon setting at all, and only shows standard Windows default icon. Pro is the one with the issue.

I've emailed you a debug log.

There was an icon related error generated.

I've just had to reinstall Windows (for other reasons), and the problem has disappeared.

Thanks for the time you spent *trying* to find a solution!

Thanks, also, for simply the *BEST* Explorer replacement there is.

The problem has reappeared. :(
