xplorer2.exe starts on system startup and won't exit

Post by philibuster »

Hi,
I have recently found out that xplorer2 starts on system startup.  The problem with this is that when I open an xplorer2 window, and then close the window, xplorer2.exe is still open and running.  This means that any folder I was just looking at is now being locked by a phantom xplorer2.  This interferes with disabling usb storage devices etc...

Is this the default behavior or did I do something in the registry that caused this to happen.  My second question is this:  can I stop it from happening?  Thanks.

I think I figured it out.  I had it set so that when I opened my computer it would go to xplorer2, but to do that, I had to go into the registry and tell it to open my computer with xplorer2 using the whole phrase, "xplorer2.exe "::{blahblahblahblah}".

So, that caused me the problem.  I reinstalled xplorer2 and killed all the registry hacks.  But now, my computer won't open to the my computer directory.  it just defaults to the desktop.  Does anyone know how to do this without causing xplorer2 to stay open always?  Thanks.

EDIT:  Just wondering, is it an issue for everyone that trying to open any namespace folders (xplorer2.exe "{blahblahblahblah}") doesn't work?  i have to use xplorer2.exe "::{blahblahblahblah}" for it to go to the nice folders like recycle bin and my computer.  I think this is a flaw in xplorer2.  Thanks.

are you using litestep or similar, or  you have the standard  windows desktop?

It's the standard windoze.  Just realized that xplorer2 starts again on system startup...  thought the problem went away, but it just came back.  I really like xplorer2, but to have it always lock a folder is quite vexing.

x2 isn't setup to start automatically so it must be something you've done

when running x2, pick the menu item: Goto | Special folders | Startup and see if there's any shortcut to x2 in there & remove it

Also try a freeware called startup control panel. This detects all applications that are made to start at startup (through various mechanisms).

It also allows you to disable the starting for any selected application.

I think the problem is with setting xplorer2 as the default.  I think it just starts up when you set it as default through the registry.  I'm not sure, but I think that's how it goes.  Does anybody else have the problem?

The problem is when I do that, it won't open the recycle bin or my computer to the right place.  So I think when I added some open keys to the my computer key and the recycle bin key it started automatically.  I'm not sure, and it works all right now.
