Use xplorer2 on Citrix/Terminal Server

Post by Christopher »

I've read a couple of posts regarding using this application on these platfroms but I'd like to propose a new use. Citrix/Terminal Server is essentially using a Windows 2000 or 2003 server to host many client sessions. I call it pc anywhere on steroids. Whereas pc anywhere allows one user to take control of one desktop session, terminal sever allows multiple users to connect and each take control of their own unique session on the server. You can have 50 users connected to one server, each running their own copy of Word, each seeing only their own session.

Citrix is Microsoft Terminal Services with a few enhancements for management and usability. In the context of this discussion, Citrix and Terminal Server are the same thing.

So, one problem terminal server administrators have is that with this many users connecting to a server, the server needs to be locked down as much as possible so users can do what they need to do and nothing else that could compromise the integrity of the server. This would include installing apps, downloading activeX controls, deleting files, yada yada...

Unfortunately, windows is made to give users maximum control. I'm looking for an application that is a stripped down, and I mean VERY stripped down Windows explorer. I'd like it to have one function in life and that would be to display the contents of one folder. In that folder I can put icons for what apps the user needs to see. By giving the user only this one window, they would have no access to the file system, no browser access, no panes, no bookmarks, no nothin! It would make the perfect shell replacement for our terminal servers. Try and lock down Explorer or IE with these types of controls and you'll find, it cannot be done without major reg hacking and employing and endless list of group policies.

Actually, I'd say that if this were available, there would be plenty of users for it. Some may even pay for it

This is just a need that I know is out there and I know some sharp developer (unfortunately I'm not one of them!) could whip it up without too much trouble.

I propose the name xplorer .5  :)

If anyone knows of such an application, please reply to this post.

Thanks Everyone!
