Unable To Rename Folders

Post by atesluk »

v 1.5.0.2 LITE:  I just upgraded my XP from SP1 to SP2 and am unable to perform a rename either with double-click or F2.  Any suggestions?  I've already re-installed the pgm.

I note that user tenbob also had a renaming problem
(disussed here)
He said he resolved the problem as a result of the discussion, but it was never clear to me what the root cause may have been.
Nevertheless, reviewing that discussion may be helpful to you, atesluk.

Unable To Rename Folders

Post by atesluk »

Thanks for the info.  Looking at the Tenbob problem, I think mine is the same.  I am now able to only rename from the Tree pane on the left, however, not able to rename an existing folder or even when creating a new folder with F8.  It is always saved as New Folder and I cannot rename it from the file pane.  You're right, there still is a problem but at least I have a temporary (though not preffered) workaround.  Any other ideas are apprciated.

I really don't have any further ideas; but am willing to work with you to try and find the issue -- if you think it is worthwhile.

Assuming it is a worthwhile excercise** ...
Let's start with the obvious:
1. Were you able to rename items before upgrading from SP1 to SP2?
2. Have you installed all critcal and recommended updates following your SP2 upgrade?
3. What localization/language is your Windows XP, and is it a standard user-owner PC install or a corporately-mangeed special, or "other"?
4. If rename used to work OK, what else has changed in your system configuration / newly installed/uninstalled programs since then.

** But, if it is not worth the bother, please say so. ;)

Unable To Rename Folders

Post by atesluk »

Yes, I'd like to figure it out since that's the easy way to rename Folders/Files and I do that often.  Maybe others have encounterd this so a solution would be valuable.

1. Yes, I was able to rename fils/folders prior to upgrading to SP2.
2. I believe that I have most of the latest updates.  I cannot freely install these upgrades as I do have a corporate computer.
3. The language is English (US).
4. I have other s/we installed but nothing that would drastically change any settings.

Unable To Rename Folders & Files

Post by atesluk »

No I don't.  In fact, I have to switch to it to rename files as I'm only able to rename folders from the Tree view.  I forgot to mention this previously.  I'm unable to rename folders or files.

Unable To Rename Folders & Files

I found the problem (if it is supposed to be one!!)

For Select Columns, I had Full Name selected.  When I changed to Name, the rename functions work.

Mystery solved.  Thank you.

didn't you get the error message on the statusbar when you renamed with that column first? the error text clearly indicates the solution!

Unable To Rename Folders & Files

I guess I did but did not notice it at the time.  Only heard the sound.  Never really noticed the message line before.

Why is it that it will not rename in the Full Name column?
