Big problem: Vertical Spacing of Thumbnails

Post by easternavenue1 »

When viewing thumbnails, it looks like the length of the file name of the first image sets vertical spacing for all the thumbnails displayed.

It looks like if the first file name takes up only one line all of the thumbnails display with a one line file name.  If the name takes two lines, then all thumbnails appear with a two line spacing, and if three lines, then three lines between them.

If the second displayed file has a three line name, the images display with one line between them.

The pattern seems to stop with four lines.

This creates a big problem.  Instead of seeing 16 thumbnails on each sub-window (3 line file name)(dual pane view) I see 12 thumbnails on every screen that I scroll down.

Lots of my images have very long file names for searching.  Depending on the sort order, there may be many possible first images.

The number of thumbnails displayed on a screen shouldn't depend on the chance length of the file name of the first image.

Solutions.

1.  Provide an option to turn off file names completely.

See other posting about this.

Comment. If you really want to see the complete file name, you can always key alt-enter and look at the name on the properties sheet.

2.  Set the spacing for 1 line file names regardless of the length of the name of the first file displayed.

Comment.  Since 1 is needed anyway, this would be extra work

3.  Provide an option for the number of lines displayed for file names.

Comment.  Sounds like more work than 1 or 2.

Good catch of strange behaviour.
x2 Pro behaves the same way.
I like best your suggestion #2 as preferred behaviour (always one line allocated for filename).
And and option for no line for filename display (with easy turn on/off) is also good.

On further reflection, the thought occurred to me that someone who wanted multiple address lines separating rows of thumbnails might have the opposite complaint.  I wanted one line because I wanted to maximize the number of displayed thumbnails and didn't like the multiple lines resulting from the chance multi line length of the name of the first file.  Someone else could complain he wanted multiple file name lines and didn't like the single lines resulting from the chance single line length of the name of the first file.

I now think the best solution would be to let the user set the number of lines for file names in the thumbnail display to a fixed number in options.  Zero would mean no file names.  1, 2, 3, or 4 would mean to set up that number of lines for file names.
