Taskbar Entries

Post by googlymoogly »

Currently, the only thing holding me back from using xplorer2 as an Explorer replacement is the Taskbar entries. I'd like an option to make it behave just like Explorer does using the current dir icon as the taskbar icon (I only use one pane, and instead several windows all over the place, because I work fastest that way) and the entire path as the window title, not just the current dir name.

An option like this would be a great addition to an otherwise splendid program.

Oh also, an option (some half undocumented registry setting would be fine) for hiding the breadcrumb bar and even the File menu would be awesome! I've been using a registry hack to do the same with Explorer for years now. I'm a keyboarder and a power user and with xplorer2's extensive hotkey support, I really wouldn't need the File menu at all. If it turned out I'd need it for something, a right-click option on the window menu to toggle it would be really nice (exactly like mIRC).

This is how my Explorer windows look, and it'd be really neat if I could do the same in xplorer2.

I don't get it!
Unless you posted the wrong image, that's just equivalent to x2 in single-pane mode, list view with tree, quick viewer and toolbars disabled/hidden.
I would think if that's all you need, you don't need x2.

Hmm, maybe I'm stupid, but I haven't found a way to, in xplorer2, hide

a) the breadcrumb bar
b) the File, Edit etc., ... menu (commonly called the File Menu)

If it's possible, some pointers would be great!

I'm not sure what you mean with "if that's all you need, you don't need x2"... you can't possibly mean that all the extra features that x2 has are useless? xplorer2 has great features (literally tens and tens of features I'm after, none of which are related to the tree or the quick viewer or toolbars), and I can access them without clicking around with the mouse, so I don't want the screen space to get cluttered with attention-grabbing menus I would never use...

well, I said I didn't get your point.

I guess what you call the breadcrumb bar is the pane header/titlebar with the full path info you want.
That can be hidden with a regi-tweak.
See registry.txt for DPF_SHOWHEADERS

There may be a way to hide the standard menubar, but I don't know it.

The toolbars and tree and Quickview panes are easily turned off, as I am sure you are well-aware.

The request to show the current directory's icon as that of x2 in the Taskbar has been requested.  I cannot say whether nikos has any plans to implement it as an option.

The main titlebar is designed to give a (cryptic) indication of the directories showing in both panes.  I am unaware of any way to show full path for single pane (except as in the pane header)  [&, BTW, I agree that the main titlebar content is largely a waste of space -- I use the pane headers to see where I am.]

& my comment about not needing x2 was from the point of view that half of its 'power' for most users is having the dual panes for ease of doing the most common file management tasks of copying, moving, comparing directory contents.  Now I see that you are not like 'most users', so I mis-spoke.  My apologies.

HTH  - at least in part.

As x2 is a dual-pane multi-tabbed application, its task bar button cannot show the basic addresses of all the folders. Most of the users would be using its dual panes (if not tabs). So the task bar  was designed to show only the two panes' addresses.  (The task bar button just does not have enough space for anything more, like the icons.)

(As Windows Explorer shows only one address at a time, it can well afford to show icon, etc.)

Working with several x2 windows (each in single-pane mode) is NOT recommended, as most of the dual-pane commands are lost! You should use tabs.

Let us know what you typically do, so that we can help you with that.
