AVG detects false positives all the time. Couple of month back it was marking all my complied autohotkey scripts as trojans. This issue might get fixed in the next AVG update.

Unfortunately you are a victim of an AVG false alarm. :(
You should send a report to them abiut this.
Hopefully they will fix their checker on the next update.

Alternate AV program suggestions?

Post by pyrogator »

I've been using AVG, but this is now the second time in just a few weeks that major programs have triggered false positives with AVG and it is frankly annoying to have to wait and hope that the AVG people fix this soon.  The previous false alarm was with Blizzard's World of Warcraft patches.
Anyway, do any of you have any suggestions for alternate AV programs to use?  So far, AVG has been the least annoying and least intrusive of the ones I tried.

I loved Grisoft's AVG when it was the only AV that ran on my older computers without bringing them to their knees performance-wise.

But the false positives were a nuisance -- so when I upgraded all 'puters to more capable machines, I changed to other products. After trying and being dissatisfied with Norton, McAfee, F-Secure and Panda, I have settled on BitDefender for my home computers. Excellent performance, reasonable price, dual-licence.

You should make your own decision based on your usage and preferences.
There are many survey / rating sites out there.
One I like to start with is http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
BitDefender has usually been in the top 3 on their list, and I see that currently they are #1.

Back to the false positive issue with AVG ...

For reference: Generic False positive reporting instructions from AVG bbs is as follows
If you suspect a file to be a false positive. Test the file at [virusscan.jotti.org] and if it is a false positive, archive (zip, arc, tar etc) the file using a password and email a copy to virus@grisoft.com with a brief description as well as the password you used to archive it with.

If it is a false positive , turn off hueristic scanning for the time being. When Grisoft adjusts the virus defintions you can turn it back on. If you are unable to still test/email the file after disabling the hueristics, you will need to temporarily disable the Resident Shield.

It may be a false alarm or may be not. Why Xplorer2? How could you be so sure in either way? In any case, no one could find comfort with the warning, do you?

Call me OTT but as a software professional i am extremely careful about what i install onto any of my PC's - this is the 1st false +ve i have had with AVG...  NO i will not assume it is a false positive...

As for AVG fixing it ? huh... it's a code change in xplorer2.

ask yourself: why would i install a virus and send it to my customers? Am I suicidal? Don't you think i'd at least go for a rootkit so that i wouldn't risk such ridiculously easy detection?

as for AVG, i don't personally use it but as you can see above there are plenty other people that have experienced false positives

And there are MANY more AVG users who haven't ....why are you being so defensive, no one has accused you of installing a virus, we are simply informing you of a problem. I have had AVG and Xplorer2 for many years. This is the first time I have had a problem like this with any program. I would rather have a refund than assume its a false positive. I run Vista also; the previous release ran with no problems, this one even when AVG is UNINSTALLED, still refuses to run. Lets stop playing the blame game and try and solve the friggin problem!

Actually the initial post reads like an accusation to me so I understand why Nikos might feel a bit defensive.

Anyway, here's a good page to check suspicious software thoroughly:

You are correct, it does; but the other posts don't, neither do the other threads on the same problem. Nikos is a moderator/writer, he should know better than to react in this way.
Will check out your link now, thanks.
