x2 pro crash under vista

Post by tobyhall »

I've used xplorer2 pro with great happiness for some time under XP.

I've just got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium. Whenever I try to copy/paste files in xplorer2 with CTRL-C CTRL-V, it crashes (on the CTRL-V) with the message "x2 - explorer replacement has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

The first time it did this it recommended I install Update KB938979, but this didn't improve things.

Copying using robust transfer works fine, but I don't want to have to do this when I'm just moving 1 file around.

I hope someone can help... I have version 1.7.0.4. Here is the information given by "Problem reports and Solutions":

tobyhall,

Welcome to the board!

A number of users have reported issues with Vista, and most, if not all, have been resolved as far as I recall.
I don't run any Vista machines (yet) myself, so cannot be of direct help.
If you use search (above) on the forum, I expect you can find your answer.

If not, I expect that one or more of our growing number of Vista users will step in with some sage advice.

Please post back with whether or not you resolve your issue(s), and/or have more questions.

HTH

PS - nikos is on vacation for a couple of weeks.  Hopefully our experienced users will step up and help out in his absence.  :)

Thank you for your reply.

I did have a look back at previous posts, and there were a couple which seemed to deal with similar problems.

One thread petered out because the guy gave up and went back to XP. (That was http://forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic.php?t=51 ... 4aafd8089e - sorry I don't know the best way to refer to another thread.)

The other one just came to an end at some stage (though having looked at it, I realised that I crash when I try to drag and drop, too - whether or not I have "Show in groups" set): that was
http://forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic.php?p=28 ... f12d6aa32d

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks again,

Toby Hall.

vista home must have a bug with this drop operation, i can't think of anything else. My vista ultimate has no such problems

until i can reproduce this i can only recommend using F5 to copy instead of copy/paste

ps i believe drag-drop will crash for you too? Have you tried dragging with the right mouse button?

Many thanks for your reply - and for writing this wonderful program.

Here are some observations:
1. Yes, the crash happens with CTRL-C/V, with left drag, with right drag, and when I select copy/paste from the right-button context menu.

2. There is no problem moving/copying files in this way from xplorer2 into other applications (e.g. windows explorer) or onto the desktop.

3. However, x2 crashes when I move/copy files from other applications into it.

4. I haven't found any problems with moving/copying when not using x2.

5. Perhaps this is something to do with my settings in x2? x2 was the first thing I installed when I got my new laptop 4 days ago, and I used it to install everything else. It didn't crash until yesterday. I suppose it's possible that I never moved/copied files except robustly during these 3 days, but it doesn't seem likely. It wasn't until much more recently that I copied my x2 settings over from my previous computer: perhaps this is what caused the problem? I'd like to test this by restoring to x2 default settings, but I couldn't find how to do this - presumably there is a way.

6. I don't know how widely x2 is distributed, but there must be a lot of people out there using it with vista home premium. Surely they're not all getting this problem. If anyone out there is using x2 pro with vista home premium without problems, please let me know!

Many thanks again,

Toby Hall.

Re my point 5 - no, this isn't the problem. I cleared all my settings, and x2 still crashed in the same way.

I use xplorer2 on Vista Home Premium as well as Vista Enterprise but I can't repro your crash.

Thanks for the feedback Toby.

Having the resolution posted helps others when they encounter similar situations.

Cheers,
