Question Marks in "Modified" column

I haven't seen this question asked before; if it has, please redirect me.

Sometimes (mostly) the date and time are displayed with extraneous question marks included, e.g. ?9/?15/?2007 ??5:03 PM

Is this a bug or a setting I can change?

I'm using Windows2000 SP4

this is a wacky one but was fixed (patched to be exact) in the latest v1.7
