Making xplorer2 the default and not windows explorer

Post by Jrtsan »

After reading all 4 pages here and many elsewhere I realize it is still not clear to many new people trying to make xplorer2 their default search engine.  I found a great explanation of the HKEY places and values described here:

go to : I can't post links yet, find my name and I'll post a similar issue with this link.

To make it work they suggest three places for changes and not just directory

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory]

right click in a folder and create a new text document
paste everything below into it and label it something.reg
when you save it save as a all files so that it is a reg key and not just
a text file or else it can't execute

If you have the lite version, copy & paste version 2
Version 1, copy all below and paste: (including the version 5!)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\xplorer2\\xplorer2_UC.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\xplorer2\\xplorer2_UC.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\xplorer2\\xplorer2_UC.exe \"%1\""

version 2, lite xplorer2 copy this
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\zabkat\\xplorer2_lite\\xplorer2.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\zabkat\\xplorer2_lite\\xplorer2.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\zabkat\\xplorer2_lite\\xplorer2.exe \"%1\""

restart your machine

Now when you right click on a file you will have xplorer2 at the top to open.  However, I have yet to find it open with win+E which would be nice.
If you know a way, let me know.

I hope this helps someone who, like me, tried everything else first.  Note it was said the space should be there between the last "" and I admit it did not at first work without the space using just directory but in this final version it works fine and works the best. When I changed just the directory then the xplorer2 choice would not show up until after my second folder was opened each time.

STOP!!!

If you are reading this far, the above post by JRTSAN is wrong!!

He forgot to include the zabkat folder in the registry hack above.

I'm tired of reading about this, I've decided to join the forum and post a new thread as well as a correction to the above.

HERE IS THE CORRECT .REG

------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\zabkat\\xplorer2\\xplorer2_UC.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\zabkat\\xplorer2\\xplorer2_UC.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="xplorer2"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\xplorer2]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\xplorer2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\zabkat\\xplorer2\\xplorer2_UC.exe \"%1\""

---------------------------

Please notice that the only thing different is the "zabkat" path.

I've tried this and ths is the one 'hack' that works perfectly with ALL areas of Windows XP-SP2. I could give a crapola about Vista, but if you're using XP, this is the ultimate hack.

I saved mine as "InitialSetup.reg" and run it right after a fresh install. Every possible click on drives, folders etc. works seamlessly.

regards,
Sti||born

Thanks for pointing out an omission in that old post, sti||born.
The keys used should, of course, include the full correct path to whichever xplorer2 executable one is using.  I expect any user doing a registry hack has enough smarts to make the adjustments for their particular usage.
Cheers!

PS - profanities are not necessary -- we try to keep the board family-friendly.

I'm undecided as to whether this is a good or bad thing! But are there switches to reuse exisitng x2 windows should i decide that to be my preference?
nikos wrote:only x2 itself is smart enough not to open a new window
but no worries, extra windows are cheap as far as resources are concerned
Unlike nealeh I am definitely decided that it is not a good thing.

The reason is not to do with resources for windows; it is simple useability.  When X2 closes, it stores in the registry it's configuration and the folders it has currently opened.  When you start it up again without any specific folder, it reloads this configuration and opens the same folders.  X2 stores only one such configuration in the registry.  If you have more than one x2 window open, each one you close will wipe out the previously stored registry data.

In the past three and a half years, since these posts were made, has anything changed?  Does x2 (and x2 lite) support a command line option yet that will enable it to find any running x2 process and open the new folder in a new tab of the active pane?

If not, it's about time, I think.

I only discovered x2 around the beginning of this year and I am liking it more and more as I discover more of its capabilities. I'll probably upgrade to the pro version once I've got my head around everything I can do with the x2 lite!  So I'm hoping that this mod will have made it to x2 lite by now.
