Easiest way to move file/folder to parent dir?

Post by lateko »

Hi,

I guess the topic says it all. I'm new to this very nice looking proggie, but the one thing i'm missing is an easy way to move file or folder into parent dir. Quite common task i think. In several programs there is a '..' link to and in those it's usually one click procedure.

I searched the forum and found out that this '..' is considered as "ancient technology" so i was wondering what is the best way to do the same task in xplorer? Wouldn't want to keep tree pane showing on screen just for this one task...

cheers,
Late

Greetings Late,
... and welcome to the board :)

Well, I wouldn't characterize ".." as ancient technology; but its presence has been designed out in favor of more space in the folder panes and the argument that there are many other ways to navigate to the parent.

Unfortunately (and you have zeroed in on the issue) there is no immediate replacement drop target to represent the parent folder if the tree pane is not open and showing the parent in view.

However, with x2 features being largely user-driven (with rational justification for productivity enhancement) there is always the hope that nikos will add an option permitting users to show ".." if they choose, so they can drag-&-drop to it.
FWIW, another suggestion being bandied about is to make each path segment which shows in the folder pane title bar into a drop target, which would accomplish the same thing and more.

Until then, the workaround is to either use the tree pane, or a cut and paste operation,
viz: select items > Ctrl+X > [backspace] > Ctrl+V
(& you can do similar with the dirty rodent's r-click menu, but it's not as clean.)

You can of course load the parent in the opposite pane and then simply drag-n-drop your selections there.

The parent folder can be loaded in a tab (any pane). The tab itself acts as a drag-n-drop target.

Refer to User Manual for more details.
