(maybe) Offering Help about File Search

Post by BillMS »

Hi all  -- new member, 1st post here.

Visited here yesterday, researching my current problem with very limited file searches (which I use a *lot*). [Newish system with XP Pro SP2].

Read lots of related topics, learned some interesting things etc. But -- no solution for my Xp2-lite file searching 'mystery' (guess it is really a problem with XP's Win Explr).

Today, found a Google hit (dated ~2004) that, apparently, XP has a 'feature' that limits its file search (default?, don't know). Anyway, a registry entry tells XP to limit searches to 'registered' extensions only. Gheesh...

Changing a zero to a one (that allows *all* file extensions, not just the registered ones) fixed my problem (so far anyway). Check registry for:
FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions.

[I don't know if it it 'OK' to include actual website link here. Or, if limited to certain folks, etc. I'll learn.]

Maybe this well known by some folks. I just wanted to mention it, since I have happily used Xplorer2/lite for several years. Give something back, so-to-speak.

Another thing I learned, with all my rummaging around, maybe I should try the Pro version -- I finally spent time reading about its advanced features. <G>

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the tip, Bill.

Lite users should appreciate that. :)

and as you alluded at end of your post, x2[Pro] has its own powerful built-in search engine that can do even more.
