X2 not staying in memory on 64 bit

Post by RickyF »

Tested X2 Pro 1.7.2.0 64bit on W7 build 7000 64bit.  It seems to work perfectly. Opened and closed it several times and each time it exited correctly.

Was a little disappointed with the so-called "less obtrusive" UAC in Win7 anyway.

Considering there are plenty of 3rd-party firewalls which can be configured to trap/query all scripts, executables, and - more importantly - all registry access, UAC becomes redundant, if you'll excuse the phrase in these econo-centric times.

And there's no particular irony that anyone reading this is here because they found a certain 3rd-party app superior to the one Windows supplies.  Imagine that.

A trend doth develop.

That article was posted Feb 04.
Here is an MS-sponsored blog response posted Feb 05 to the reported UAC issue.

Jon and Steven wrote:Windows 7 is too much fun and folks are having too much fun for us to be having the dialog we’re having.
These guys speak for Microsoft regarding security issues?  Oh my.  The Google-workplace hip-is-good pseudo-ethic approach is... frightening.

I do give them points for owning up to their security mistakes (albeit belatedly), but the fact that it's all so unnecessary really grates.

I suppose some people would consider a 'real' firewall popping up every 3 minutes to ask permission would be even more intrusive than UAC itself, but at least it would be informative - that being the main IT complaint about the original UAC two years ago - most people just didn't know what they were/are passing permissions to.

It's comforting in a Dr. Strangelove sort of way to know dear Jon and Steven are on the case for the ordinary user, and having "too much fun" while they're at it.

Maybe not.

It's also telling that only the RC will be patched, not the Beta, even though it's quite update-functional.

One thing that really irks me about W7 and UAC, despite introducing four levels of operation, is that the sidebar does not function when UAC is set to the lowest setting :(

I think it is a security feature, but you can still make it work.

Sorry for the late replies - Yes, Snake, I was using the Blue Badge tool on all the pre-700 builds, but I am sticking to build 7000 for the nonce - I just saw an article / post over at my other home (my home away from home?) seven forums that a new build has been shown called 7030(?) that is 64 bit - but the leaked 7022 build is only 32bit - so I am sticking with my 7000 build as it is 64bit.

Also, as mentioned above, in x86-64 land X^2 exits just fine.  In fact, though, with the older builds, when running a 32bit builds I had apps that not only stayed in memory (using PE to see) but would get locked to the taskbar as well - as in I close app but it stays resident in a dormant manner....

somebody else wrote an email for windows 7 and said that the drivebar didn't work (it was empty), can anyone see that?

That is correct.   Turning on the drivebar yields an empty strip.
[64-bit x2 v1.7.2.3  on win7 beta build 7057]
[ditto for 32-bit x2 on same 64-bit config.]

I hadn't noticed it before, as I do not usually use the drivebar.

no errors that I recall.
But my recall abilities are failing :o
and I don't run win7 much except as a toy when I'm bored.
I haven't done any heavy-duty testing of x2 on it, which should be obvious from the fact I missed that the drive bar is empty.

I'll give the debug version a whirl and post back with anything unusual. :?
