show folders only; folder/file sorting

Post by jimspoon »

(1) A forum search reveals that this Show Folders Only has been suggested as a feature (View > Visual Filter > Show Folders Only).  Would also be nice to invoke this by hotkey - would be useful particularly for keyboard navigation.  Especially when Folders Sorted As Files.

(2) I tried to make a Rule-Based Visual Filter to show only folders, but for some reason it excluded all the files, but also many of the folders too.  Tried unchecking "files" box on the filter.  Tried "Attributes Contains +D" as a rule too.  Same result.

(3) Is there a keystroke to toggle between separate/as files/mixed mode sorting?  A way to set that up?

@ (3) -
That is just one of a several Tools | Options... settings for which it would be beneficial to have a keyboard shortcut - even if only an unassigned index# for users to customize to their individual preference.  I know of no way to set it up currently.

@ (2) ...excluded... also many of the folders -
"Attributes contains D" should work, as should "Type contains Folder"
What folders don't show?  [Note: Don't expect zip-folders to show, unless you include them in your filter.  After all, they are files.]

@ (1) -
I agree that would be useful.

the easiest and fastest hyperfilter to show folders only would be to clear all fields including the "files" checkbox. However showing only folders is equivalent of seeing the tree, no?

No.

size/dates/contents/owner/...

(1) Oh, ok - I made a "folders only" filter by clearing the files box.  The one I made at first did not work because I did not clear "*.*" from the "Named" box.  With this mask only folders having extensions were shown.

(2) I am really just thinking about ways to navigate through the directory tree using only the keyboard.  In this case it can help to see all the folders together and arranged alphabetically.  A quick Ctrl+Alt+N, with folders and files sorted separately or in mixed mode, does this.  Seems easier than using the tree pane.  It would be nice to be able to invoke the Pane Header right-click menu with a keystroke, but I don't see that.

@ ... did not clear "*.*" -
A common misconception brought on by old DOS habits is that "*.*" is a wildcard for including everything.
For "everything, use "*" by itself;
because "*.*" restricts the match to items containing a "."
