more bookmarks in x2 please

Post by mario »

i've been using 2xexplorer for some years now and think it's the best file manager out there (like a lot of people here :)

and while xplorer2 is getting there very quickly, i'd like to ask for more bookmarks (the ones from 2xexplorer that we are used to, ctrl+1-5), that's all that is keeping me from moving to xplorer2.

and something happened with 2xexplorer... some versions ago (more than a year) i could navigate very quickly with the keyboard... like, c: root, type win and enter, then type sys and entrer, it'd jump to the windows\system folder. current versions are slower loading the folders, and when i type the paths quickly enough it gets me to the wrong place. this is also true for xplorer2, but i don't know if it's possible to fix.

thank you and keep up the great work nikos!

you can make the best of the single bookmark in x2 using the indirect bookmarking technique described in FAQ#20

2x has a glitch with fast keyboard navigation which is the result of single-click activation processing. I believe I have fixed the problem in xplorer2 though so if you are certain you have seen problems there too I'd like to know!

thanks for answering so quickly!

about the bookmarking-one-folder-full-of-shortcuts thing, i just couldn't get used to it (so far)... i mean, i've used the ctrl+1...5 shortcuts so much it takes me some time to realize i have to press ctrl+1 and then choose the right shortcut (by typing the first number, as i've renamed them to numbers like i was used to)... guess i just have to keep trying... but are you planning to add the other bookmarks to xplorer2?

and about the fast typing thing, the problem with xplorer2 is actually a feature... it remembers the last selection for each folder i've been on the current session... so, navigating quickly by typing the first time works ok, but the next time it begins searching from the current selection... so i'd have to either remember what was selected, or type the home key before entering the folder name... is there a way to make x2 not remember the selection when you re-visit the folder? 2x acts like this and it's good that way (at least i'm very used to it).

by the way, is/will there be a way to change the inactive pane color?

i really appreciate your work on 2x/x2! thank you very much for such quality software!

naturally, more bookmarks will be available
x2 started remembering more of the previously "visited" items in folders because the forces that influence this forum thought it would be a good idea (hi guys! :))

however the new build x.31 does path autocompletion in the addressbar with [F1] which may be a more efficient way to travel especially if you're going far -- you don't have to visit each intermediate folder

do you find the inactive color too dark?

good tip about the address autocompletion... but, if i type c:\win and press f1 it shows c:\windows selected, so if i want to keep typing i have to press end and then the backslash... could you make it work like bash filename completion? (to add the backslash at the end of folder names and not to automatically select, so i can keep typing?) that would be great! :D and even better if tab would complete the filenames... but i don't know, maybe people use tab to change panes while typing on the address bar... that leads me to another suggestion:

don't know how hard would that be, to have custom keys definition... so that people can assign different actions to tab, f1-12, ctrl+1...9, alt+enter... these actions could be bookmarks or program functions...

and i'm just not used to the inactive color pane thing... there could be something different, like a small caption bar over the panes with the current folder, with the active one colored like the active window titlebar, and that you could double-click to go up... sounds familiar? :)
or it could just be made lighter (or ajustable thru a reg key)

I also found the selection a bit awkward but i wanted to give users some clue that by pressing F1 again they would get the next match replacing the selected text. I'll have another think. Nice idea about adding the backslash though, if the completed name is a folder

Tab in the addressbar takes you back to the panes, so that's used up. There will be a little bit of keyboard customization for things like bookmarks but not too much. These things are hard to program

I agree with Mario about bgcolor and titlebar features in x2 : I simply "cannot" use x2 because I got used to double-click on the pane title bar to go up.

Besides i get confused with the color of inactive pane : maybe it is too dark ? The fact is that i always look at the grey one thinkin' it s the active one grrrr.

Having the titlebar back would be great... as for the drive bar that i miss so much ;o)

thx
