Hello everyone!
Ran into the following problem. xplorer2 started opening each folder in a new window. Could not fix that by any regular means, deinstalled it instead and tried to reinstall.
But that proved impossible. The installer announces that I do not have sufficient rights to install programs on the computer, then comes a notice that it cannot right to the designated folder and the installer exits. Nothing has been knowingly changed since the first installation of the program.
Any ideas what would this mean?
"You have no permission to install..."

Nope 2
Sorry, guys!
Not that rich to engage in experiments.
Good ole XP. BUT how many reboots shall I attempt?
Seriously. I do not know what it is, but that is no dialogue of Windows, so it is either xplorer2 or some virus. This is a question the developer should be able to answer, but, judging from what I read here, he might be too busy writing new versions of Pro...

Re: Nope 2
Nope. If your machine is compromised, than no developer of any program can answer this question and you are the only one who is responsible for that (assuming that it is your private machine), also for a qualified virus check (and that is more than trusting a simple scan from inside the running system).Strix wrote:so it is either xplorer2 or some virus. As you stated at the beginning your problems started with the problem, that every new folder opened a new tab. Whatever is responsible for that, all respective settings of x2 are stored in the registry tree, where no restrictions do exist for limited users. If there are restrictions, than it is some kind of "security" software acting weired or some malware.
The impossibility of installing x2 newly from inside an admin account seems to follow your first problem. You should check, if you are able to install any other program. You could also try to install x2 with the safe mode of Windows as a diagnostic measurement.

Why does it take making someone angry to make someone respond at all?
Well, as to the comment by Cosmo. Neither Panda 2010, nor Spybot S&D ver. 1.62 find anything strange on the system. Tried several rootkit removers which found nothing to remove. Of course, there may be something very vicious and nasty sitting somewhere, and there is no anti-xxx solution that would make one 100% sure of the result... BUT: it makes life much easier blaming everything on somebody else. I know, I am doing it myself, not writing my own software, for instance. And asking for help with software someone else has written.
I installed vlc ver. 1.0.5 and FreeCommander for starters. Kodak EasyShare brought up no strange dialogues during install. Cleared registry using all methods known to me (yes, I admit, I am no expert in the field...).
So, shall show such a devotion towards x2 as to undertake unnecessary hardships in order to have it? I will think about it.
In the meantime, please be advised that there may be some issues with x2. Rare ones. Like Toyota suddenly accelerating endlessly. But nevertheless. These may be caused by some coincidence, anti-virus getting over-cautious towards particular installer (just realised that I haven't tried turning all security software off; but that was not necessary previously), or maybe some MS update has changed something in the system that affects the way x2 works.
To save my own peace of mind I will refrain from using x2. At least for some time, until a new version of (lite) appears.

A quick follow-up.
Tried boot-time scan of avast. Nothing unusual. So I believe I am in the position to state that my machine is not compromised. So the only thing responsible for those strange phenomena is x2 itself.
That is why I thought the person who wrote the code could help. I do not know whether the software contains a dialogue saying that the user installing it does not have sufficient permissions to install. And, in case it does contain such a dialogue, what could be the conditions triggering this dialogue to appear.
No other computer with x2 installed (that I know) has done the same thing. Yet. So I am completely at loss of understanding what it was and where it started. In case anyone knowing the x2 code could find the time to drop a line about it, it will be greatly appreciated indeed.
Visu labu!

I still think that the problem is somewhere in the system. The idea and wording about a virus came from you (see my quote above).
Now it appears, that there is more than one AV-program installed (Panda 2010, boot time scan of avast); that is never a good idea and makes the system unpredictable. Also you did not specify what you mean with "all security software", but you said, that you did not try to turn this off. There are again and again problems being reported with those programs acting strange.
As you said yourself ...
Nevertheless I would try to install for testing in Windows' safe mode (as already suggested). Further more I would try to empty the user's temp folder in safe mode (otherwise you end up with some messages, that some files cannot be deleted).

What can be more logical than investigating in the specialties of the questioned system?Strix wrote:No other computer with x2 installed (that I know) has done the same thing.
