There seem to be enough "rocket scientist" (or rocket scientist wannabe) types asking for the feature, that you may be the b€n€ficiary for adding it. ;)

Myself, for advanced renaming tasks, I would prefer to use any of the more intuitive 3rd-party apps, preferring ReNamer for the nice way it integrates with x2 as a button on my toolbar.

[My opinion is that RegEx was useful long ago when all one had was a command line console interface for doing stuff; but nowadays it should be the choice of last resort when you have no other option.  It is all-too-easy to specify something other than what you intend with RegEx, and there are so many much more intuitive options available.   ]

If the idea is to do the most-frequently needed task inside x2 (and leave the others to a dedicated application), then I would say the RegEx function is NOT the candidate.

Instead, you could provide the re-arrange function described here:

Definitely meant for ordinary mortals.

For those who want to debate which feature is preferred, pick your favorite from here: http://www.den4b.com/wiki/ReNamer:Rules

Well, it turns out there is a 64 bit version of awxRename... it's dated June 2008 so not being actively developed but I'm going to try it anyway.

A couple of features I would like to see in the built-in mass rename are search and replace (with regex support) and remove x characters from position y.

A good example of a good renaming tool is the one built in FreeCommander.

FYI, with another file manager, XYplorer (quite expensive compares to x2), it can rename 200 files from spaces to underscores by just pressing Ins; another popular renaming job is convert from %20 to space.

as I see it the mass renaming bit can get so complex that it deserves a stand alone application, and there are tons of them already
