Why no paste command in right mouse click menu?

Post by gumby »

I am surprised that there is not a paste command in the right-mouse click menu of xplorer2. I just installed the latest version, 1.8.0.12. I don't remember having this problem in previous versions.

I'm using single-click instead of double click and having problems copying and pasting between panes. I'm always accidentally opening files when i just want to select the pane. (it's also proving rather difficult to select multiple files without opening them)

any suggestions or answers would be very appreciated.

There's actually no change in behavior.
Whether (or not) paste appears on the (r-click) context menu depends on the pointer target.  To get the paste choice, "drop" in a "white space" or "drop" on the folder icon at left side of the pane title bar of the target folder pane.

You may try using using the Tools -> Options -> Eat First Click setting to mitigate the difficulty of selecting panes (there is also an entry in Tools -> Advanced Options -> Layout [tab] "East First Click will Protect Single Selections")

Personally, I find that using <Tab> to switch panes works better than "eating" clicks (which I just found "too fiddly"), and learning to select multiple files by clicking the Middle-Mouse-Button is significantly more convenient than the usual nonsense of <Shift> or <Ctrl> delimiting, though it's a matter of taste.

As fgagnon pointed out, right-clicking on any empty space within the pane ought to provide a Paste command - or if all else fails, <Ctrl-V> is always there.  (Using free clipboard-managers such as ArsClip [great name ] or Clip-X [no longer in development] can also go a long way to facilitating such things, though they aren't strictly "necessary" as they are intended to expand Clipboard usability rather than the function of pasting.)

(As an aside, it's nice to see someone else using Single-Click selection, as most users tend to consider it akin to eating cooked vegetables, conservative entities that they be :D.)

Wow! I didn't expect such quick and excellent responses. Thanks!

I already have "eat the first click in panes" in Tools-Options selected. But it doesn't work with single click mousing. I click in the other pane and the file where I'm clicking opens. The program is not eating the first click.

As for single click, I am trying it because I often have the problem with double click, that the cursor moves during the double click and I end up accidentally moving files to another folder instead of opening them. I think I also have problems when shift clicking to make multiple selections, with unintended movements making the files do what I don't want them to do.

But multiple selections with the middle mouse button -- I will try this, but I dont like using the middle button because it requires much more effort to push.

I can make multiple file selections with single click activation but the first file i click on always opens. Then I can close it and shift-click to make the multiple selections ok, but wish I could find a way to do it without the first file I click on opening.

Thanks again for the help.

If you hold <Ctrl> down before you click on the first file, it should not open - after all, that's what "single-click" means... it's supposed to open it unless metred via <Shift> or <Ctrl>.

To be fair, the Eat First Click is intended for preserving file selections when moving back and forth between active and in-active panes.

It will, however, work with Single-Click selection as expected when switching active panes if you use the Tools -> Advanced-Options (Layout tab) "Eat..." addition in conjunction with it.

If all-else fails, you can also try adjusting the speed/sensitivity of the Double-Click function in Windows itself, via the 'Control Panel -> Mouse' options dialogue, as well as the speed of the mouse itself.

If you have a more modern mouse, it's usually possible to adjust the DPI settings independent of Windows in relation to its sensitivity to limit how much it moves relative to the mouse movement itself - but if that makes no sense to you, or you haven't a clue about drivers for your mouse, it may not be possible on your system.  Check the hardware manufacturer's website first, if possible.

Thanks Kilmatead. The advanced options setting didn't work for me, as it is eating the first click and selecting the last file that was selected in that pane. That's not what I want. I want to select a new file by single click without opening it. But your insruction to hold down CTRL when selecting works. Thanks again.
