Creating URL Shortcuts

I appreciate the response. But since I don't use Chrome, that would not be a reasonable an option. Besides, I would want this option in X2 regardless of the browser I might be using.

Well, x2 accepts links from any browser (just drop the link in any pane, any folder. If you have access to that folder, x2 will show the link. You can click on the link to open your default browser and load that URL in it).

Does that serve your need?

That sounds perfect--except for one small problem: I tried that and I cannot make that work. I tried "dragging" from Internet Explorer's (IE)address bar and nothing would "drag". I tried copy and paste with CTR+C/CTL+V and all I got was a "x2scrap.txt" file that contained the URL. Perhaps I don't understand what you mean by "drop the link in any pane"?

Or perhaps, I didn't explain clearly what I wanted? Lets say I have a web page open in IE and I want to create a link to that web page in a specific folder that is open in X2. The only method I know in X2 is to right-click within the X2 folder pane and choose Explorer/New/Shortcut and then fill in the Windows built-in standard 2-page dialog.

Of course to do that, I first have to copy the URL from IE's address bar, switch to the target X2 folder pane, right click the pane, mouse click through Explorer/New/Shortcut, and fill in the 2-page dialog. That is an awful lot of steps to do which I know can be simplified somehow.

That has been a pet peeve of mine for decades. I know I have absolutely no chance of Microsoft changing that for me so I was hoping maybe Nikos could give me a fix that would make me happy.

The simplest method I could think of would be to make that command contained at the end of Explorer/New/Shortcut available as an option for me to add to the X2 Toolbar.

Of course, your solution would be even nicer if I could indeed just copy the URL and paste it into the folder and X2 would automatically create the link for me.

the idea is to drag the little icon from IE's addressbar and drop it where you want. It works in xplorer2. If it doesn't for you then you must be running xplorer2 in full administrator mode?

I have been working daily with computers for over 3 decades including way back to Windows 3.0. Yet in all that time, I never knew that! Guess you never get too old to learn something new! I even figured out that works with Windows Explorer as well. Geez! THANK YOU!!!!

Dragging the "little icon" from the address bar works in Firefox as well.

As long as you're taking requests...

Can you please provide a toggle for root folder sizes! Using Control-Double-D to calculate folder size every time I change tabs is an annoyance. I realize that it's resource-heavy and that there are probably 3rd-party programs that might do this in X2. But I would like a built-in toggle to leave root folder sizes permanently on. Those that don't want this feature can simply leave the toggle off.

Save X2 and restore on reboot

Post by bmolony »

I would love to have an option to save the current X2 windows that are open and then automatically restore them after a reboot. That would include all of the current screen positions, folder panes that are open, folders/files currently selected, etc. As close to everything exactly the same as is reasonably possible.

I would love a pane that shows recently accessed folders that could optionally be placed beneath the tree the way the quick viewer is.

Basically just the "goto" --> "recent folder" menu option in pane that can be permanently displayed. However without the tab dependancy that the current menu option has.

And as this is my first post on this forum, just like to say Hi, and thanks for this awesome app :)

Sounds nice, Nikos, but I'm running Win7. I'm doomed to Double-D unless you provide a folder size toggle.

While the FolderSize site does say "Folder Size 2.5 is for Windows 2000 or XP.   Sorry, Vista and 7 changed Explorer so it can't support this column anymore", however this column does work in Windows 7 when using x2.  The author of the utility is aware of this, but chooses not to acknowledge that his application is still useful for Windows 7 users who also use xplorer2, so it will work just fine.

I don't see it as an option from the columns dialogs (X2 or explorer).  Will restart and see. (W7 64bit)

nope

as all shell extensions you must match foldersize with xplorer2, ie 32/32 or 64/64 bits. I don't know if foldersize comes in 64 bits

as for the 'recent folders pane' that is already available, it is the drop down portion of the addressbar

It will show up as Folder Size [X], and shouldn't require a restart.  I just installed it now - and while you are correct, it did not appear at first - I went into the Control Panel and (using View By: "Small Icons") selected the Folder Size entry to switch the "Format" to "Compact" - once I did this (and restarted x2 just for fun), it appeared in the <Alt-K> list as expected and works just fine.

To be honest I don't know why this extra step was necessary , but that got its attention anyway.  (Win 7 x64)

And completely off-topic, By All Things Holy, Win7 has way too many nonsense column options.  Did they actually pay someone to dream them all up?
