I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that the Length/Duration information in question only exists by default for those filetypes which the Length column already displays (AVI, WMV, MP3, et). When you branch into FLV, MKV, and so on, that info seems to have to be manually extracted from the header (meaning pre-processing per infotip per file) - which is why most of these utilities are happy enough to limit themselves to a Tab slot in the Properties window. If it were just a matter of flipping around a few reg entries I'd not be so reticent - I am, after all, only a pretender. How much blood do you want?

It doesn't seem to exist unless you're specifically using a handler from some other application to generate the custom tooltips (like a 3rd-party media player). I haven't seen one that can be successfully emancipated from its parent application. Even then, you're still only talking about manipulating tooltip info (that's the easy part) - not actually sharing the iHandler proper. For bmolony this isn't much of an issue (he doesn't use them anyway), as he would be happy enough to see them all raped and pillaged just to get a specified bit of info in your new column, if it could even be gotten so easily in the first place, about which I have my doubts. Did you ever read codec specifications? They don't taste nice.

When did you turn into an optimist? Must be a harbinger of doom.nikos wrote:...at least we could have a go trying
In any event, I've yet to find one that deals with all audio as well as video files - this is a task for bmolony to find one that works for everything he considers pertinent. As mentioned dbpoweramp is the best I've seen for audio, but I don't know if it handles video. I'm sure someone knows of a decent player that makes this integration, to save the trouble of installing 10 things just to find one that works - no one likes clutter.
(This is the part of the forum experience that Elmo calls "interactiveuserrequest happyfuntime".)

He he hee...
If I had known some secret that would resolve the issue, I can assure you I would have already divulged it. I'm afraid this stuff is way above my paygrade. Besides, if it was easy, someone would have already done it.
But I sure am glad to see some serious consideration given to the issue!

I'm always in favor of audio-visual feedback when working with files and folders (that's why I like click sounds when browsing in all directions, folder coloring and various other notifications) so I would like o be able to add more of that to my xplorer2 experience.
From the top of my list:
1. the option to add a customizable sounds to different events (most important for me would be browsing, copying, cutting, pasting and deleting);
2. visual confirmation for copy, paste, cut and delete (I'm thinking of popping in the center of the active tab a black stripe with white text that would last a second or two informing the user of the action and then fading out quickly). Stripe background/foreground color, text size/font and color, stripe display duration should be customizable.
Of course, these 2 features would be toggles, I imagine most users wouldn't want them permanently or even on by default.
I really tried to simulate all these using 3rd party tools and scripts, but it's a mess compared to how it would work if it would be native to xplorer2.
May not be a request worth investigating as much as the others, but if you think it is possible to add without much trouble, it would turn my xplorer2 file management experience to heaven.
Edit: I want this so much I actually forgot I asked about adding the clicking sound to the browse event before.

MediaTab is MediaInfo, warped into a propertysheet - see its About tab.Kilmatead wrote:It appears for some metadata aspects that the files must be "analysed" first, to glean their particulars. As this is more of a job for a shell extension, taking a sub-link off of RightPaddock's suggestion, you might ask the creator of MediaTab to see if it's possible for him to inject it as column information - it appears he's already done the hard part of getting the information via a shell DLL (it adds a working tab to the "Properties" window), instead of you bothering to run an external programme, so he might find the idea amusing enough to try - as right-clicking every file you want to know details about seems a bit awkward to me. It can't hurt to ask.bmolony wrote:So my assumption is that Length (Duration, Play Time, etc.) is not relatively available for a wide variety of file types. From that I would assume it would not be available for tokens, infotips, or infobar. The field might be displayable, but the value in the field would still not show.
Probably better to ask the author of mediainfo about IColumn/Property handlers - best place is here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96516
Or you can get the C++ source for mediainfo and do it yourselves, you get that from here http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download/Source
MediaInfo gives the info bmolony wants to see in an infotip in Windows Explorer, but not in x2 - I dunno why, and nor do I care much.

IMO that screen shot shows how an infotip should be presented - clear of the object in question - not on top of it

nikos, Will version 2 increment contents column for folder junctions and symlinks when I drop something into them - like what happens with a regular folder ?
Its not happening on 1.8.1.4 [Unicode] x64 2011-04-22 under winda's 7.
Thanks RP

I guess adding features has to stop for a while in order to release a stable v2. I'll store my preferences for when the next feature-request season opens.nikos wrote:(i understand this symlink issue looks like a bug but it isn't fixable really unless I rewrite 50% of xplorer2 :shock: )

I just had one of those "Ah, I see events'
I suspect the MediaInfo that Kilmatead's been looking at is the latest one, but I've been using the version that ships with the KLite codecs. It has no version number, it's dated 2009-07-22, and its total size is 3.6MB.
However the latest one is version 0.7.44, it's dated 2011-04-20, and has total size of 10.8 MB
As is often the case I prefer the barebones version over the all singing, all dancing bloated rump version. The infotip feature isn't present in the barebones version, however its actually implemented in its own DLL - so maybe it could be retrofitted into barebones.
MediaTab is obviously implemented on 0.7.44.0 - I was holding it responsible for the bloat, but it inherits it all from the new Mediainfo - why can't programmers leave well enough alone.
nikos I would have thought a legend like you could rewrite half of x2 in your own lunchtime. But if I cant have a functioning contents column for symlink & junction folders, how about a voice operated refresh command

That "one little column" is the one I treasure most highly, I can deduce a lot about my data from a column of content counts. San Fairy Ann.nikos wrote:if just one little column doesn't work it's much easier for you to press<ctrl+R> no?

My feature wishes are pretty mundane, I guess
* Apply / save all preferences when "OK" (or whatever) is clicked, without requiring an additional "Save settings now". After upgrading (Vista->7) and reinstalling x2, I had to configure my toolbar more than once since I forgot to explictly save it. And speaking of the toolbar - If there's any way (and there may not be, depending on how it's implemented), please make more listbox rows visible in the toolbar customization dialog. Or at least make it resizable. That dialog looks like a standard Windows API, but I've not researched it as far as options go.
* Have a map / disconnect network drive button(s)
* Ability to duplicate (copy) a directory tree, folders only - no files.
